This is the Clasina, a beam-trawler from Grimsby, but currently berthed in Peterhead Harbour A beam trawl consists of a cone-shaped net ending in a bag or cod-end, which retains the catch. In beam trawls the horizontal opening of the net is provided by a beam, made of wood or metal, which is up to 12 m long; this is what you can see in the photograph. When fishing for flatfish the beam trawl is often equipped with chains, known as ticklers, to disturb the fish from the seabed.
