Empty nest...

After a month of watching a common wood pigeon couple build their nest on a tree right outside my window, today I witnessed an attack on the nest and the pigeon-mother by a hooded crow. The pigeon fluttered her wings wildly in a desperate attempt to scare off the assailant, but the crow wouldn't back off. Finally the crow left, but after a while the pigeon-mother left the nest too and neither she or her partner returned again. My theory? The crow must have destroyed the eggs or killed the young hatchlings, or the pigeon herself tramped on the eggs while defending her nest. I am sorry for the pigeons and hope they do manage to raise some babies this year.
