Cirencester Amphitheatre
The earthwork remains one of the largest amphitheatres in Britan. Build in the early 2 nd century it served the Roman city of Corinium (now Cirencester). At the time the city was second only in size and importance to London. It had a capacity of 8000 spectators. After the collapse of Roman rule it was fortified as a local stronghold, but was propably abandoned when the Saxons capture the town in AD 577
