Dirty money!

A foul day of rain, sleet and hail. A day for indoor photography; this is a close up of shells, fashioned into shell money from the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu. Each of the "coins" is about 5 mm in width.

Shell money as a medium of exchange that was once common in the South Seas. It consisted either of whole sea shells or pieces of them which were worked into beads or otherwise artificially shaped and strung on lengths of thread made from coconut fibre.
