A detail of the Collieston harbour wall at low-tide.
What you see is the whole world for a group of small sea-snails. When the tide is out they huddle together in a crack in the concrete. By doing so they help conserve moisture and thus avoid desiccation until the tide rises and they are once again covered in sea water. Then they head out to graze on the algae that grows on the wall, producing the clean surface that you can see surrounding their "base". When the tide drops once again they unerringly navigate back to their home. A simple life!
