A rare photograph of a Trowie.
Trowies are malignant or mischievous fairies or spirits in the folklore of Scotland, particularly common in the Orkney and Shetland islands. They are generally short in stature, ugly, and shy in nature.
They venture out of their 'trowie knowes' (earthen mound dwellings) in the afternoon or evening, and often enter households as the inhabitants sleep. Traditionally they have a fondness for music, especially fiddle music, and folktales tell of their habit of kidnapping musicians or luring them into their dens.
Best watch out when you venture out!
