After a lot of research, I finally picked my new gym in Berlin. I went, got a free day pass, and... found a piece of candy in my running shoe. Model citizen right here, folks!
Ever since I can remember I've had a very weird relationship with exercise and fitness. On one hand, I've always wanted to be strong, fast, and able - on the other, I really couldn't get excited about any form of exercise. A bad sports coach turned me off team sports, a couple of overwhelming PE teachers made me despise running and aerobics... and here I was, at 20, with no idea how to exercise without hating every minute.
So I started doing the one thing I liked - basic strength training. Crunches, leg lifts, squats... 300 of each per day, because I didn't know you should start low. I threw up a couple of times the first few days, and since my exercise change didn't go hand in hand with healthy eating, I felt constantly weak and sleepy. But hey, I was getting slimmer, so it worked! Right?
Well, no. It took a while for me to re-formulate my approach to fitness, but I'm giving it another go - with a firm set of guidelines of how to (hopefully) steer clear of both obsession and discouragement.
