natke gie the best!
Yumi Miyazaki thank you so much
Marcin Biedroń Most people, like me, only understand how each dog race is different when they own one. Before I had a dog (some mixed terrier) I was blind in this area and I thought that it was all about how owner treats the dog.
The training I was attending was for both owner and a pet :). I had to change the way I treat the dog, and had to stop treating the dog as human.
Sometimes I even think that it should be forbidden to sell/give a dog to someone without a training.
Yumi Miyazaki hello. @Marcin you are right, most people think that dog is naturally easy, will fetch naturally, will jump naturally, will catch frisbee naturally. NO NO NO NO... for shiba... it is impossible. For the longest time, i trained them to jump, fetch and catch frisbee. It is probably 2000 throws then Yumi started to get it. But Miya (my second shiba).. was probably too little, she did not even understand to grab with her mouth. She had to go through 5000 throws of frisbee to at least grab it with her mouth.
But agility aside, obedient is another thing. It is true the training is mostly for owner, not the dog. Because the owner has to know how to build bond, trust and communicate with the dog. Shiba is by nature a very dominant breed, we cannot use dominance over them. It is stuff like this that that we owner have to constantly train ourself.
It is common to most shiba (and dog) breeder that purchasing from them required a puppy class. However we ourselves were considered a first time dog owner, we were not required to attend puppy class. We never attend puppy class but we never stop training them everywhere, at home, through the help of youtube and information sharing among shiba owners. Our second breeder would not sell to us randomly, until she was convinced that we could handle this breed by seeing through our photos and our training of our first shiba
I personally feel that puppy class is not necessarily useful and occasionally just another word of "dog playground" meanwhile obedience is a long term commitment and consistent training process not just few times in the class. I feel that because I received many many questions about how I train my dogs. I found that after finished puppy class, owner stop training, they are usually impatient, inconsistent, and resigned to the fate that "yes my dog is like this".."no my dog cannot catch" .."my dog wont fetch"...
Satoshi T Yumi is great teacher about Japanese dogs! :)
