4 inoperable mobile phones...For a friend who having difficulty with DoDo.. These are 2G Network phones. They work well – provided there is a network to support them. That network has, in recent weeks, been consigned to history by the introduction of the 4G network. This suits the mobile phone network manufacturers and providers. The generations born with microchips in their heads together with the network providers find this quite satisfactory. But someone like my 70+ year old friend wonders why she is suffering the deprivation of her little phone. She doesn’t want a smart phone when she sees how it takes over the lives of others. She is an avid internet user on a little Dell provided by a friend in Tennant Creek. No one explained to her that on a certain magic Monday she would no longer be able to use her phone. She had to find out the hard way – with silence. She had received a 4G Sim card but she thought that, with the new Sim installed, she would be connected to the 4G network when the time came. She has learned the hard way what the 4G network means. However, she has still refused to have a Smart Phone in spite of family and friends offering to buy one for her. But she has dug her toes in. You see, she does not believe in having the unnecessary technology. So I have given her another way which is not a100% substitute but, considering she is – for the most part –housebound, it works well for her. I got her a cordless phone system. One end plugs into the NBN system. The other end sits in its charger on her little computer table behind her ‘computer next to her big recliner chair. And unless she makes heaps of calls, this is all free. And the mobile phone company is still charging her for her non-privilege of being unconnected to the 2G Network. So my friend and I are off to community legal aid to-morrow to get Dodo off her back.
