He was in complete darkness except for the lights top and bottom. With the camera set to a long exposure I used tiny led torch to put light where the rings would go. This gave me the light and shadow bands on the body. Then I added the rings in post.
I did try light painting the rings but could never get them neat enough to look electrically generated. Also I kept knocking him over ☺
