A walk in Quartiere Matteotti [day 63]

I walk in front of this columns every day with my dog, but never before I took the time to learn something more about it.

This exedra was designed to be the entrance of an area built in Palermo in 1931, designed by the architects G. B. Santangelo and L. Epifanio.

This neighborhood was built as a "garden city" in a previously empty area at the edge of the town (not anymore nowadays), to give houses to rail workers. There are several nice houses, in neoclassical and art nouveau style.

Formerly known as "Quartiere Littorio", was later renamed "Quartiere Matteotti" after the fall of the fascist dictatorship. Giacomo Matteotti was a member of the Italian Parliament who opposed fascist party in 1924, and was murdered because of it.
