dry creek in the schoolyard

I have decidedly mixed feelings about "building" an artificial, man-made "natural" dry creek in the asphalt schoolyard. I mean, what's the message we're conveying to kids - that nature is something that you design and build and have to work to keep it looking good? Where's the "natural" process in that?
