S.F. is a city of hills but I’ve learned recently that much of Chinatown is built on raised mounds consisting of rubble and debris from the 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. As a result whenever we try and create an outdoor garden space for environmental learning we run the risk of exposing soil that’s heavily contaminated by lead and other undesirable metals. The beige building behind the construction site is the G Lau Elementary School and you can see how it’s perched on top of a steep hill, likely containing a good bit of the city’s past.
