Verity is a 20m tall stainless steel and bronze statue created by Damien Hirst, and stands on the pier at the entrance to the harbour in Ilfracombe.
The statue depicts a pregnant woman holding aloft a sword while carrying the scales of justice and standing on a pile of law books. Half of the sculpture shows the internal anatomy of the pregnant woman, with the foetus clearly visible. The name refers to "truth" and Hirst describes his work as a "modern allegory of truth and justice".
We've seen the sculpture on a few visits now, and it's still somewhat shocking to see up close. First, it truly is huge, and is physically very imposing as it stands at the entrance to the harbour. Secondly, the appearance of the woman is either beautiful or a little grotesque dependant on which side you are viewing.
It was hugely controversial when it was erected in this sleepy seaside town 7 years ago, and I'm sure it will still be raising eyebrows when it is removed in 13 years or so when the loan to the town ends. Good art is always controversial though - right?
