We've visited and journeyed across the common many times, but I'm not sure I've ever ventured into the town centre in the past. In doing so, I was delighted to come across the parish church of the Holy Trinity - it's hard to miss it really, as it dominates the skyline!
I was puzzled by the main feature of the church building, the somewhat odd, though visually arresting tower. Not a spire, nor a traditional square or rectangular tower, it's certainly unique! Reading up, it seems there was originally a spire which proved too heavy for the arches which supported it. After a long period when it had been in a dangerous condition, the spire was taken down halfway in 1563 and finished with the corona and pinnacles which give it so unusual an appearance.
Whatever the history, it's a beautiful building in gorgeous surroundings, even on a wet grey day!
