Clap for our Carers, also known as Clap for the NHS or Clap for Key Workers is a recurring gesture of appreciation for the workers of Britain's National Health Service (NHS) and other key workers during the global pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and spread to the United Kingdom in January 2020.
The idea came from Annemarie Plas and the first event took place on Thursday 26 March 2020 at 8 pm. The following week Plas posted on Instagram "tonight we will show our appreciation again! For ALL that go out to work so that we can stay in!". Several celebrities have supported the campaign.
The event is typically a round of applause outside a participating person's home or from one of their windows, however, people have also taken part by banging pots and pans, playing music and setting off fireworks. Millions are reported to have taken part.
The first campaign was launched on Thursday 26 March 2020 at 8 pm, when people across the UK clapped, cheered, and rang bells to thank NHS workers for their role in during the pandemic. Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte also supported the event from their residence at Anmer Hall.
On 2 April, appreciation extended to all key workers including healthcare workers, emergency services, armed services, delivery drivers, people who work in shops, teachers, waste collectors, manufacturers, postal workers, cleaners, vets and engineers. That day, Plas posted on Instagram that “tonight we will show our appreciation again! For ALL that go out to work so that we can stay in!”. The campaign was subsequently repeated, receiving widespread media attention, including by the state-funded broadcaster, the BBC. Major political and social figures also supported the event, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson who clapped outside 10 Downing Street with Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Other celebrities included Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, David Beckham, Daniel Craig, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Naomie Harris and Sir Elton John.
Several notable buildings have also been lit up in blue during the events. These have included The Shard, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, and Blackpool Tower, The London Eye, the Tyne Bridge, Tower Bridge, the Kelpies and MediaCityUK. Windsor Castle, where The Queen and Prince Philip are self-isolating, was also turned blue for the Clap for our Carers event.
The event is expected to take place every Thursday during the coronavirus pandemic.
