Translation of the text next to the stone in the display case:
In 1856, the stone was the starting point for measuring railway distances in “hours.”
In 1875, the metric system replaced hours and feet. Since then, in this place should be the kilometer marker 39.292, measured from Basel, seat of the former railway administration.
The stone continued to be popularly known as the “Kilometer Zero Stone.”
However, the correct term is “Hour Zero Stone.”
The cross is a symbol of the central location (north–south and east–west) within the Swiss railway network.
