Grace I'm in Wellington.. You have a way better chance of getting photos from Christchurch!! Last night there was a really good aurora which was photographed all the way up to Auckland but I am up in northland at the moment so missed it. There's several Facebook groups if you search aurora australis. Anywhere with a clear view south and minimal light pollution would work when there's one going

Grace Can't say, it is dependent on the sun, and doesn't happen at a regular time. Best thing to do is check out the southern hemisphere aurora group on Facebook, the admins on there do regular forecasts. Also you can get apps that alert you, but they are mostly all based on northern hemisphere data so may not be as accurate. There's also a current alerts Facebook group, where people post when they are actually seeing/photographing it
