My first attempt at headshots. My friend needed one in black and white for her business card, and I thought I'd see what I could do. She wasn't very comfortable in front of the camera, and I didn't seem to be much help. I wasn't very impressed with my results. I'd love tips for this if anyone has any! We may be getting together again soon.

Hattie Day @Jennifer Have you tried photographing people while they are talking to you? As opposed to just posing shots. Sometimes I find the best headshots I get are from the former.
Another tip, try and tap into the subject's natural blinking rhythm. I know many photographers who observe the way their model breathes or blinks, in order to time their images precisely. It also might help convey more of a connection in the image.
Another tip for headshots is to set up the shot with the model's eyes closed, then count to three and on three you press the shutter and they open their eyes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, it takes a bit of practice. It's a good way to lighten the mood as well, as the model won't be expecting it!
