It was soon after I was mesmerized by the sword fighting scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that I knew that I had to have a timber bamboo of my own. With great anticipation, I planted a 5-gallon Madake bamboo, and waited... The first three, four years, the bamboo didn't seem to do anything. Then, it started to spread, very slowly. Eight years now, I have a small, magical grove in my back yard. This year, so far, two shoots have popped up, and I even found some youtube videos from Japan for instructions in how to harvest them for eating. But I think I won't do that. Instead, I'll continue to shoot the shoots from time to time and post them as part of my project.
