There was a window of time tonight with clear sky, after the milkyway core rose, but before the moonrise, so we went to the south coast to have a look.

Grace Thanks Daniel, those are the small and large magellanic clouds, they are irregular dwarf galaxies. You can only see them from the southern hemisphere :)
