They don't necessary have to be vivisected. A lot of them is bred for their eggs - they are a very good model organism for studying early embryo development because they are very big and thus easily manageable .
I couldn't work with animals myself because of the killing. I work with cell culture, which doesn't require killing any animals fortunately. But I do recognise the importance of animals in research. E.g. the first pregnancy tests were developed with the use of frogs.
So is it ethical? I have ambiguous feelings but it helps us move forward for sure.
