Today, I continued testing my Fotasy N35, a fixed lens converted for Sony from a CCTV lens and selling for under $30 on Amazon. I wanted to go down to a culvert where Aliso Creek crosses under a major road through a pipe, and where kids -- or maybe not kids -- create some pretty weird and disturbing graffiti out of sight. I made it to my destination, but photographing graffiti can be a challenge, and the result is dark and grungy by design. Perhaps another day I will go back and reshoot it, but today I was sidetracked by the vibrant California fall wildflowers I had to pass on the way to my destination. Every time I shoot them I promise myself I will find out what they are called. My best guess is that it's goldenbush.
In a unrelated -- or so you would think -- development, last night I gave in and downloaded a sample pack of Trey Ratcliff's wild Lightroom presets. The one you see applied here is called Restoration Software.
A very respected fine art photographer and teacher Brooks Jensen says presets cannot make a photo, but they can unlock the hidden potential of the photo.
And so you have it. A photo taken on a lark with a toy lens and with a wild preset applied. There is no telling where my photography will take me next, but it can't be any worse than shooting out of focus stoplights in the dark.
