traditional engadine houses

These were farmhouses with thick stone walls and 'funnel windows' that were where the house needed them to be and not where they looked good from the outside. Therefor the windows are not placed in a row. The humans and the animals were living under one roof, the house was divided into two parts. The houses were built in that same way during several centuries! #architecture #old #traditional

jazzie Several reasons. They were technically not able to build big windows in the 16. century, but wanted to be able to see the surroundings and the sky, so they built this shape. And in the beginning there was no glass, they used pig's bladders to close the windows and still have some light inside, so a smaller window was better to keep the cold outside.
