I am quite proud of my class - I gave them the challenge of creating a seat out of 5m of 2x4cm wood (height: 45cm, strong enough for the student to sit on it, stable enough to feel safe, and with a good, individual design orienting at the triangle of form, function and construction). Starting from sketches on paper, they built a 1:5 foamboard model, and then realised their own chair. They all were successful and working like crazy until the last moment. We literally screwed in the last screw this afternoon a couple of minutes before the bell rang. Some had very creative ideas such as the boy who created the chair that’s in focus, it is a tiny swing perfectly suitable for someone who can not sit still. Some others were brave enough to realise chairs of which we both didn’t know exactly how to construct them.
The only sad thing about this: I’m not going to teach them in the handicraft class next year anymore.
Lido Young people's creativity is incredibly important. Only a good teacher allows their students to truly unleash their potential. Bravo to you and your students.
