Snowy egret

I recently got a piece of valuable advice. When taking a photo, compose your shot, then... wait for something to happen.

I took five or six hasty shots of the egret afraid it was going to get spooked and fly away. They all came out pretty good. Then I decided to try out the advice. Now that I had a backup shot (or five) in the bag, I could afford to compose the shot and just wait. I was squatting, and my legs started going to sleep. I was worried about losing balance and stumbling into the creek. I was wearing nice pants and didn't want to sit down.

After about a minute, the egret opened its bill as if to laugh at my discomfort.

Done.

ponzu Thank you! I am happy with it overall. There are always questions in the back of my head if I could have shot it sharper or processed it better. Other people's shots of birds look amazing. Well, not all, but the ones that catch my eye.

I have to confess that I was not paying attention to anything but the bird while shooting. Particularly not to the background. The birds' head, neck and bill, i.e., the most important elements of the shot, were against the background of fairly bright and fairly messy reeds/weeds. I liked the photo enough to spend about 1/2 hour cloning out some of the worst clutter. I am sure you can detect traces of my work now that I told you about it. If I had not done it, I don't think the photo would have the "wow" factor that it does. And even then it is a pretty small "wow". I was too far form the bird, with "only" a 210mm, to get a real "wow" shot.
