A beautiful day in New York. It was so lovely that I made a commitment to myself that I'd walk everywhere today - no public transport at all. Given my hotel is in Midtown and the office is at the World Trade Center, that meant almost 15 miles of walking, and 250 minutes of exercise! Honestly, it felt wonderful - I love this city so much, particularly the stretch of boardwalk alongside the Hudson.
I think this is the third time I've visited the Oculus, but the beauty of the architecture hit me harder today than ever before. It somehow seems wrong to even compare what is effectively a huge mall and transport hub to a cathedral, but the fire at Notre Dame has really had a significant impact on me personally, and led to my considering architecture in a new and different way.
The interior of the Oculus is the closest I think that modern buildings have come to the awe-inspiring feel that a large cathedral has. Vast, open, airy and striking in a way that makes one consider your place in the environment. Then you walk out and potentially walk immediately into the 9/11 memorial, and that makes that feeling hit home with an even greater impact.
It is a remarkable building!
