Would heat their houses to 20 C in winter here …..
Lauren Huston Newer houses are fine because the design standards have changed over the years.
Most of the older (let's say 80s or earlier?) houses are draughty. or don't have sufficient insulation.
The place I moved out of in October was lucky to reach 17 degrees with the heater on, and even then it would only be the one room. I learned to love my heated throw and electric blanket.
Thankfully we don't get as extreme a cold as you do in winter, so while it's unpleasant it's not the end of the world.
Lauren Huston That's pretty typical temperatures for Melbourne houses in winter. Our houses are built to keep heat out, not keep it in, so during winter they are bitterly cold.
