I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up last year and again last week. Yes, I am an organized person, but Marie Kondo's philosophy was a game changer for me! Her's was a novel approach -- rather than "a place for everything, and everything in its place," or "discard things you haven't used in awhile," she advocates keeping only "that which brings you joy." Last year I had a great deal of success instituting that philosophy everywhere EXCEPT in my clothes closet. NOTHING brought me joy! What I liked didn't fit, and what did fit made me look fat. To quote Al Bundy, "it's not the dress that makes you look fat, it's the fat that makes you look fat!" That's the reality, so I had to make a choice - buy clothes that flattered or lose weight. Seeing as how I hate shopping, I chose option "B." Now 15 pounds lighter, it was time to tackle my closet. Although it seemed crazy to do so, I took her advice and at 7 am I gathered ALL tops and stacked them on the bedroom floor. Starting with the off-season, I evaluated each piece to see if it "sparked joy." At first, EVERYTHING sparked joy because it all fit! In time I became more discerning; and by evening I had discarded over 90 tops, slacks, shorts, and tops! I was lighter and so was my closet! It was a joyful day!
