Caen Hill is a flight of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, between Rowde and Devizes in Wiltshire, that cover a total rise of 72 m in 3.2 km. That longer stretch includes this straight staircase of 16 locks, each with its own 'side pound' holding water to fill the lock in times of drought or heavy use. It takes 5-6 hours to travel through all 29 locks - I'd say narrow-boaters are definitely deserving of a beverage or two after that!
Truly spectacular to traverse on water or foot, it proved to be rather tricky to capture from the air, particularly in the harsh morning light. 📷
