Phillip Flores How are you able to make your background pitch black?

Michael Gatton I use a small homemade softbox and flash for the light source. Set camera aperture and speed (on manual) to go black with flash off. Note the camera settings here - ISO 100, 160th sec, f 13 - indoors :-). Add flash. On a cloudy day I can do this outdoors in situ ("Musclewood Fruit/Bract"), but most of this series is done indoors. Some tweaking in lightroom as needed.
