I am embarking on a square challenge - all February I intend to post photographs in square format. I have done some research, enough to realise that it is not merely a matter of shooting square! Some of my results to date are better than others, but to fully embrace this challenge I need to learn and would welcome any tips, guidance, ideas or links to good tutorials. Many thanks
Ian Prince Excellent idea Tigg, I think you're on the right track...hihi, with your latest photo. Googling "square format photography " turns up quite a few articles, the common theme seems to be the importance of composition, simplicity, balance, geometry and symmetry. In many ways it's "back to basics", which is a good exercise for any photographer. Fwiw, my last hundred or so photos are all 4x3 crops....not quite square.... but a format I prefer over 3x2 or 16x9...In any case I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Ian Prince P.s. You might find some inspiration here.... andrewsgibson.com/blog/2012/01...
tigg Thank you Ian. I have certainly looked at a number of articles through Google, but I admit not Andrew Gibson (although I have recently subscribed to his newsletter). I will have a good read - to date I have concluded you have to think more .... I also use 4x3 as my default format, which is one of the reasons I am challenging myself.
Eugene Alexeev I really enjoy this crop. ("Introspection", "Made To Conform") Saying that, I cannot imagine shooting it full-time. I'm following to see what you come up with.
tigg Thank you for the encouragement!
Anita Miszczyk This is such a great idea! I used to take a lot of photos for Instagram, when I had it, and it appeared to me so easy to do, but once I've started my project, I've found out I cannot fit my photos into square anymore. So I guess that could be a challenge for March! :D I'll see how you manage, thanks for inspiration!
tigg I am learning ..... Good Luck!
Daniel Zaleski Good idea and great challenge!
tigg Thanks for that - must admit I had not thought of this description, will do!

tania I don't have any advice Tigg, but I really love this format. So I'm going to pay full attention to your project, and maybe follow you next.
