Canon: The Macro Lens

Hey there! I'm looking for a macro lens, that I can also use to shoot portraits with. At this moment I can afford used 100mm 2.8 USM non-L. As I will use it also for portrait photography, AF needs to be not-bad. Is it good choice? Or should I collect more money for Sigma 105mm 2.8 EX DG OS HSM or Canon 100L 2.8 IS? Thanks in advance for advice!

VIVID EXPOSURE Save you money for Canon 100L 2.8 IS it is a much better lens, and it will suit you better for your shooting needs!! The L series is a great series I would go with this lens for 6 reasons, but not limited to a # of questions, :)

1. This lens does not move with focusing (and filters do not turn). When focusing at the very close MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of a macro lens, this is a great feature. You are not bumping the lens into the subject by adjusting focus.

2. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens' AF is powered by Canon's Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor). AF is internal, fast, quiet and accurate (the original 100 macro was very similar in this regard).

3. FTM (Full Time manual) focusing is provided. The focus ring is nicely placed and sized - and is very smooth with no play (even smoother with less play than the original EF 100mm macro).

4. Color and contrast are great. Bokeh is excellent - the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens creates a very high quality foreground/background blur. OOF (Out of Focus) highlights are rendered very smoothly.

5. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM has a little CA (Chromatic Aberration) visible in full frame corners. Very slight pincushion distortion is present - nothing to be concerned about for all but the most critical work.

6. Great image quality will only take you so far. If the camera is not steady for the shot, motion blur will destroy image sharpness. F/2.8 is a relatively fast/wide aperture and 100mm is a short telephoto focal length.

Any question can be asked

tzachmost You really convinced me to wait more and get glorious L! Maybe till then, Sigma will release some 100 macro from Art series, then I would reconsider.
I've read countless reviews and still couldn't make my mind, but you have set me on the right track.
Thank you for help!

VIVID EXPOSURE No problem glad I could help!! :)

Kazzi One of those lenses that are really hard to beat. Canon 100L Macro.
