Picture Title

Recently it was pointed out to me that i don't title my pictures. That person said that every picture should have a title, because it tells the viewer what's going on in it. I think sometimes it's better to left out the title, to let the person viewing it to decide what he/she sees in the image. What do you guys think??

Paweł Kadysz I don't think I've ever skipped the title during those 480 days here. It comes to me naturally. I think it depends on your personal approach to the idea of 365 project. Some people are writing long posts under each photo and use the project like a journal. And some never wrote a word.

Title, descirption and especially tags make your photo easier to find on tookapic, and pretty much on any other site, like flickr or instagram.

Marek Podstada It didn't happen here on tookapic, it happened on Facebook. Here I try to title every of my photos to do wxactly waht you said, make my pictures easy to find.

tania To me, titles and texts are almost as important as the photo itself. I love stories... Some of them are sometimes so funny, or touching, or intriguing. Most of the time I have a title and a text but it can happen I feel so tired or so... so... I cannot write a single word.

Marek Podstada I agree, sometimes a title or a short story about the photo is great. But let's say you see a great B&W picture of a man wearing a hat on a bicycle, would it change something if it was titled "Man on a bike"? :)

tania No, that's why sometimes titles can be either funny or indirect in reference to the photo or parody of it. But I agree it's difficult to have everyday a good inspiration.

Kevin Drum I'm often posting my photo pretty late when I should be in bed already, and if I can't come up with a title right away, then I'll just put "Photo #401". I agree that a more abstract photo is sometimes better left to mystery. I try to be thorough with my tags, though... especially if I like the photo and want people to be able to find it.

Lauren Huston My titles (whether here or flickr) often tend to be something remotely related to the topic, but not always directly related. I took a photo of a waterfall that was flash flooding so it was brown and muddy. A reference to the chocolate waterfall in Charlie and the chocolate factory was made. :)
Otherwise you can tell when I've run out of options/creativity for the title when it's a literal description of the photo.
That said, I feel weird if I don't give it any title at all.

Bayron Mejia I have to realize that I being doing this 365 project like a journal type of way and adding a strange title that sometimes doesn't fit the image.

Therefore, I come to know that since the beginning of my photography I always go for a title that sounds mystical for some reason and a personal story to back up the image about something that happens with the image or the way I work with it and everything in between.

This technique I have never realized I was doing it, so it comes naturally once I take a couple of look at the image and I find something interesting about it
