1000zł (used) camera ($250) - only body

Some time ago I put here a topic what to pick mirrorless or some Canon. Now I need to hurry and budget is smaller that I thought.

On the one hand I need to have something that will help me doing 365 project but on the other hand I need something more advanced than 500D.

My idea right now is Canon 50D + 50mm 1.8/1.4 and some day used 17-55 2.8 or 24-70 2.8 from Sigma/Tamron.

Could you put there your proposals? We are talking only about body right now. First lens for around 400-800zł ($100-200).

Paweł Kadysz 50D is an old and outdated camera with very poor lowlight performance. I know, because I have one. I also have the 50mm f/1.4 which is a great lens, but still - going from 500D to 50D is not a big improvement. I also have 24-70 Sigma you mentioned and with the 50D it weights close to 1500g, which, believe me, will become annoying during your 365 project.

What I would suggest is to look for a used mirrorless camera. E-PL6 maybe? Or maybe even a E-M10 Mark I which you can get for around 1700pln ($410) with a kit lens.

Why are you in a hurry? :P

Marcin Using 500D I don't see any problem with image quality, MPix and stuff, what annoys me is poor ergonomics (no buttons for few options) only one scroll etc.

E-PL6 I though about it but for 1700PLN still I will have pretty dark lens... hard stuff

And why I am on hurry, current 500D is borrowed and it's owner needs it :)

Paweł Kadysz I found used E-PL6 with two lenses (14-42 & 40-150) for 1250pln ($300) and 17mm f/2.8 pancake for 650pln ($160). That's 100 pln more that you wanted but with 3 lenses. Two of which you should probably sell and get at least 500pln back.

The downside is that the E-PL6 does not come with an EVF.

Marcin My goal is to have mirrorless (for daily photos) and DSLR for studio work and making some money :) I can't afford both together now but I am struggling which one should go first :/ But all in all, thanks Paweł for your opinion!

J U Hi Pawel! I'm looking for camera too...:p I have found a good offer for a used Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (body) and ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 (Pro Serie). What do you think about this set for total new beginner :o ?

Ian Prince Mmm, the ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm is not a lens made for the mirrorless cameras, and is quite a bit bigger than the more modern M.ZUIKO series, and needs an adaptor if I remember correctly. That said it is a lens that has a very good reputation.

J U thx for comment... ohh you have right it is not micro 4/3, my bad. Any suggestion on lens? I am also afraid of taking pictures with this body in winter temperatures...

Paweł Kadysz I'm taking pics with the old E-M5 in -20°C and it works fine. I don't think you should be afraid to do that as long as you follow some basic instructions on how to handle your camera in winter.

As for the lens... I love my 45mm f/1.8 - which is one of the cheapest from M.Zuiko lenses.

Grace what type of photographs do you like taking? the olympus 40-150mm is quite inexpensive and I have used it for taking bird photographs I'm quite happy with. I like using the 12mm prime for landscape but I think that it is a bit more pricey!

J U thx Pawel, maybe I will go for 45mm f/1.8

J U hi Grace! I don't have favorite type of photograhs yet. I like to experimenting... I'm in a "photo-kid" stage now :D if you know what I mean...

Marcin No właśnie obecne body nie jest moje i chcę ograniczyć koszty maksymalnie na body, żeby włożyć więkoszą ilość kasy w optykę :)

Kazzi I agree with Paweł - don't go into DSLR world if not necessary. If You're considering an used gear, @Kindzalka bought E-PL5 dual kit (14-42 + 40-150) for around 1300 pln. Also, E-M10 (mark I) is a wonderful camera, much exceeding 50D in terms of image quality (and the difference between 50D and 500D in terms of IQ... does not exist, it's the same camera with the same processor, 50D is faster, has bigger viewfinder, better AF etc.).

You might also look for Panasonic G5/G6 or Fuji X-M1 cameras, maybe some of the used Sony NEX/A5x00 cameras would also do.

Marcin Thanks, I will for sure check them out! :) To be clear if my budget won't be any problem I will buy Canon 5D mark IV and Olympus OMD-EM1 Mark II <3 And that is the plan, to have both systems but now I need to decide ;)

Kazzi As a former user, personally I'd go for E-M10 now. But if You're going into Canon:

remember, from 550 to 700d cameras differ only in details (tilt screen->touchscreen->top wheel rotates 360degrees), so don't overpay. 60D was on the other hand castrated (is that a word?) Comparing to 50D from AF microadjustments, metallic alloy body with weather-sealing and quite a few other things. Also, it has a sensor from mentioned 7D-1200-1300-550->700D's, but packed in a bigger body: better handling, bigger battery afaik, more buttons, top LCD screen (without which I couldn't stand a dslr, that's why my pre-mirrorless camera was Nikon D7000).
And sensor leap from 50/500D 15mpix generation was quite big.

Oh! Nikon! Right, if You're not 100% sure You're going into the red system, consider the yellow ones. Even the old D90 is quite nice in terms of handling, and D7000 is a really underestimated piece of a camera. People remember it mostly from dust/oil and AF problems of the first serie, but it's sensor was better than 7D(and family)'s, especially in terms of restraining colours in high ISO. Great battery life is what I miss the most. ;)

Marcin Thanks for that! :)

Tomasz Wiśniewski Dude, you seem to know what you're talking about. Can I drop by to your store some time and talk over a few things about cameras?

Kazzi sure :) But I have to warn You - today I'm closing at 9 pm.m and next visit in bonarka will be on Thursday from 13 to 21 and Friday 10-15.
And we'll also see on Sunday :)

Grace I still have my d7000 :D

Marcin Today I bought 50D for 750zł (~$180) with 5 batteries and 2 CF cards (4GB), very nice condition, has "few" shoots taken but still below Canon warranty.

It was to small budget for mirrorless that I like (Olympus OMD of Fuji X), so I decided to go for something bigger for daily work in home studio and when there will be some extra money I will buy mirrorless camera :) All in all thanks for discussion, it was tough for me but I like ergonomics of 50D it is much much better than 500D!

Marcin Thanks! Just bought also 50mm 1.8 STM for 400zł ($90) with hood :)

Kazzi great idea, wonderful lens for the start!

Satoshi T Marcin , I have been with 50D for a long time. Even when I chose 50D, the reason was operability :) . When you use it in studio work, please give a lot of light with low ISO. After shooting, please reduce noise with post process. Then you can produce vivid colors and nice image.
