We've just rolled out Tookapic Feed Beta for hero users. Right now it shows some basic stuff, like new photos, users you might want to follow, new pics in weekly themes, debuts, etc.

Tookapic Feed

Right now we're working on making commenting possible right from that page. So test the beta as much as you want. Any feedback is more than welcome. Post it in the comments below.

If you are a Hero and can't see the feed, be sure to switch on "Test beta features" in your Account settings. And if you're not a Hero yet, upgrade here.

Enjoy!

Ian Prince I definitely like how the photos are larger, and how those in portrait orientation look as good as those that are in landscape.

Cool how the the descriptions and comments get shown too!

I thinks the number of "likes per day" I'm going to make is going to go up :)

Paweł Kadysz I, personally can't wait for commenting right from the feed. It will make engaging with others so much easier.

Magda Korzewska Looking great, portrait pic gain exelent visibility, perfect!. I can give a like only for picture which was upload alone. When someone uploaded more than one it is not possible. Dod you notice it Paweł?

Paweł Kadysz Yes, and it'll probably stay that way for now until I find a better way to show multiple photos posted by one user.

Katrina Yu Agree with Ian on how the photos are larger, it looks better, and how the descriptions and titles are shown. Totally adds more meaning behind a photo. But maybe if the descriptions are longer a "more" button to click on to read further would help.

Also, repetition of photos. Example, if Ian posted a photo, so it'll show on my feed but then if Magda liked it then it'll show just somewhere a few steps down/sometimes beside each other and it's a bit repetitive and throws me for a loop seeing double. Also, if someone liked this and another person whom I follow liked it as well, it repeats itself too. (Can send you screenshots for references)

Another thing, can there be a "show me more photos like this" button? Like, if I click on it on a photo, it'll show me more photos that are similar, say in color or in tags, etc2.

One last thing, the left "frozen" Feed panel bothers me.
Like if I keep scrolling and it stays there, making the feed constricting just down to two columns. Maybe when the user starts scrolling down move it up too and then the feed columns get wider?

Just some first impression observations.

Tomasz Wiśniewski The design looks sick!

Paweł Kadysz We'll continue to add more and more content to the feed. Talks are on the list.

Jennifer This is such a small thing, but it did throw me for a loop: the header under the Feed title says, "See what's up with your favorite users. Like, comment and discover new users from one page."

The sentence beginning with Like sounded similar to a colloquial usage of the word Like that's popular by teenagers here in the US at least. Also recommending an Oxford comma for that list.

Preferred:
"See what's up with your favorite users. Comment, like, and discover new users from one page."

Ian Prince Yeah, like ;)

Ian Prince Isn't English an interesting language :)

Jennifer It's truly fascinating! I'm glad it's my first language so I don't have to struggle to learn it xD my adventures into Spanish, German, and Korean have been quite interesting as well though. I just love language!

Marcin K. I didn't know that the Oxford comma has a name :-D

Now, imagine, that there is no such thing like 'a' and 'an' in some languages. For me this is a nightmare to learn, how to use them.

Ian Prince Mmm, just one column of photos this morning on my 23-inch screen. Think I prefer the way it used to work...

Paweł Kadysz You're absolutely right - 2-columns layout is more appealing, but once we started adding features to the feed it was obvious that it won't work very well.

1. We added commenting to the feed. Once you expand comments, the content below the post is being pushed down. It would break 2-column layout.
2. We needed more real-estate for sidebars (I know these are empty right now, but we'll be adding more content there very soon).

It's still in beta, so there's a lot of experimenting going on. I hope we'll be ready to release it to everyone next week.

Ian Prince Ok, I hear the constraints you have. That said I still think photo viewing without massive amounts of scrolling should get top priority (something that worked well in in the first iteration). Not convinced about the sidebars being static either. Looking forward to seeing what you come with :)

jazzie I prefer 2 columns. With one, some of the portrait formats are cut off / do not fit into my screens!

Paweł Kadysz To be fair, some of the portrait pics didn't fit on the 2-columns layout either ;)

Ian Prince Mmm, not sure about the the static "photo of the day" based on most likes either. Would rather see the featured photo that I often miss... Hope this doesn't come over too negative, that's not my intention, just trying to give you some gut impressions.

Paweł Kadysz Constructive feedback is always welcome 👍 The photo of the day is not based on likes, but on anonymous favorites. We want to reward the author with displaying the photo in the sidebar for the whole day.

This is still a one big experiment, so who knows. Maybe tomorrow we'll have 3-columns feed with no sidebars :P

Ian Prince Aha, still getting my head around the differences between the favorites and the likes :) Makes more sense to me now :)

Ian Prince All that said: I really like using the comment expansion and the inline commenting and on mobile the layout works great :)

Paweł Kadysz You can now browse through multiple photos in the feed, for example if someone adds 8 pics in an hour you can now browse all of them along with descriptions and comments without having to ever leave the feed. Same goes for photos added to weekly themes and debuts.

Few more minor tweaks left and we'll be ready to release the feed to the rest of the community. Enjoy!

Ian Prince Looking good, working well! I'm even getting used to the one column :) Hihi, portait orientation now looks better than landscape ;)

Paweł Kadysz We're working on the portrait photos. Right now they don't fit in most of the screens and dominate the feed. Here's an idea for a workaround: i.imgur.com/HKAhEFW.png

Ian Prince Yeah, I see that's now live. The idea is ...interesting.... but mmm, some pics end up ...weird looking shown like that.

Paweł Kadysz We finished working on the feed. I'm 90% sure this is how it'll look. We still need to get rid of duplicated content that pops up every few posts.

Heroes, please test it and let me know what you think.

We plan to release the feed to the rest of the users next week.

Ian Prince Looks great, although I think I'd prefer the right hand margin to scroll because sometimes it 'flickers' (on iOS) and that's where my fingers want to scroll and not on the pics in the center (and there's lots more scrolling now).

Paweł Kadysz You're right. We plan to get rid of the sidebars on mobile devices and just leave the middle column there.

vera Thank you Pawel for this new feature feed! It drives us to change our habits! Good!
Here are my impressions in a constructive way. I hope it will be positive and useful!
- I love the layout, very clear and inviting!
- personally I like when I can read the entire description under the photo
- In the shortcuts I would like to see also popular and following.
- I'm curious to know how do you exactly select my favorite users?
- the feature "who to follow" seems to me very relevant.
- very interesting to know "the most favorite photo of the day". Could you also add the number of stars?
- and what is this number "level member" under my name ?

Paweł Kadysz Thank you! First, about the levels: help.tookapic.com/search?s=lev... - but as mentioned in another Talk, we're going to rewrite points and levels system from scratch next week.

As for the content that we display in your feed - it's all based on people you follow. We display photos from people you follow (chronologically), pics that were like by at least few people that you follow + new photos from debuts and weekly theme.

The algorithm for the feed content will be tweaked constantly to deliver the most relevant content. It'll be never-ending work in progress probably.

Ian Prince Even on *big* mobile devices? ;)

Paweł Kadysz Probably.

Paweł Kadysz We have updated the feed today. It should show less duplicated content. We'll try to make it a bit faster. It should be released for all the users next week and will probably replace tookapic's homepage, which is now: tookapic.com
