How about weekly themes?

I thought it would be a good idea to have weekly themes here on tookapic. So I wrote a short blog post with some basic rules and the first theme: Knolling.

Let me know what you think of the idea. I hope this will be fun.

Ian Prince Cool idea Paweł, thanks for putting this forward!

I especially like "We’ll do it for pure fun and to stimulate our creativity" which matches perfectly how I feel about the community.

Gosh, Knolling, never tried that :/

JudithO Like the idea of themes to try new ideas, lets start arranging things ;)!

Viola Kuniej great idea, I like it! I have never tried it but I have some ideas in my head heheh so I think I will join for this weekly action with pleasure ;)

Justyna Krupkowska It's a great idea! I like tidiness and putting things in the right order ;) so I guess I'll join this challenge :D

Ian Prince I'm quite the opposite, so more of a challenge lol.

Justyna Krupkowska Hah, in that case, good luck! :D

agnieszka bladzik like the idea of some more general topic of the week, or the one that will allow to do some different interpretation. with knolling i think i may run out of ideas what to knoll. after a week i will probably get really bored when everybody will put only photos of objects in order ;)

FlyteWizard I love this idea, it's just pure fun and people can find inspiration from this weekly theme. It doesn't destroy your creativity because it isn't required. Some people will continue with their daily routine of taking pictures, but some might find it helpful on less creative days.

I would vote a strong yes to this idea.

And the no winning and voting thing really keeps this daily challenge a fun zone of creativity. If you are doing it for votes you might not make something for yourself.

Thanks :D

Ian Prince Yeah, the "no winning and voting thing" is defintly a good thing :)

Shenandoah I think it's a great idea. It not only helps come up with ideas when we're struggling, but also challenges us to do things we might never have considered before. Gets us out of our comfort zone.
If it's not difficult to implement, it might be nice to have a "this week's theme" link under the photos menu (where we have recent, following, popular, etc). That would let us look at what others are doing, and maybe give us some ideas for later in the week. Of course we'll still see the entries in the regular selections, but this would put them all in one place for those who are interested.

JudithO Having them all collected within a tab sounds great. Alternatively you could have the tag searchable so the user can bring it whatever collection they want (not sure how complicated this is)

Shenandoah I did discover if you click on one posted under the weekly theme, then scroll down to the tabs, you can click on that tab and see all the rest. It still would be nice to have it right there in the menu, but at least there is a way around.

Paweł Kadysz We'll have a separate page for weekly themes with all the photos nicely collected. It should be ready in around 10 days from now. We need a bit more patience ;)

Agnieszka K. Great idea! Too bad I only read about this after posting today's picture, but hey, I can always take it slow at the beginning. This week's topic will be a challenge, but I really like the concept! :)

mfr I think it's a great idea! :)

Jesse Lind This sounds awesome!!!

Kevin Drum I'm on board. Ten random theme ideas: shadows, music, reflection, hands, hot and cold, abstract, water, humorous, purple, wildlife.

Kevin Drum Neither would I, actually lol.

Paweł Kadysz This would make it even more interesting.

Shenandoah Good ideas. I'll add onto it. Here are a few possibilities I thought up:
All objects within image contain only shades of two colors (or even one color), forced perspective, all different types of object themes (buildings, food, plants, animals, technology, ...), pictures of pictures (photos of other works of photography, paintings, or drawings), bokeh, motion, deliberately unfocused, genre-specific (fantasy, romance, history, etc), black and white/sepia, macro, frame within a frame
