Photography rules

What tookapic.com brought me so far is understanding that I think in restrictions quite a lot. For example: A photo must:

  • be focussed at some spot.
  • have a black and a white spot.
  • use a strong composition.
  • et cetera.

My plan is to try and list all limitations/rules I keep in my mind and take a few images over next weeks and try to break that rule. Here are the rules.

  1. Some spot must be in focus. -> Make photos that are unfocussed.
  2. Some part of the image must be pure black, and a part pure white. -> Make photos that have no blacks or other photos that have no white.
  3. Using two thirds, symmetry, golden rule, leading line, et cetera. -> Make photos without any organised composition.
  4. Isolating a subject makes a better picture, either by contrasting background or depth of field. -> Make photos that don't isolate subject.
  5. Photos should be planned. -> Make photos that just "happen".
  6. Color can be used if it helps the photo. -> Make photos that use color in no logical order.
  7. Photos should be like-able. -> Make photos that pretty much nobody will like.

My conclusion is that I'll be posting weird pictures for a few weeks, but who knows what this will teach me.

I'll update the story or comment to refer to an images taken breaking a certain rule.
