Holiday lens

Hi everyone! I've got small problem for a past few days, and because I'm totally lost and other forums messed me in my head even more, I'd like to ask you about an advice. As you can see, the case is about chosing the lens for holidays. I currently have my small, good 50mm 1.8 and my kit lens 18-55mm (which I don't like to be honest). I'm going on vacations soon so I want to buy new lens to pair with my 50, probably the wide-angle to take some landscapes - but I have no idea what focal length I should choose... I've got my camera (Canon 100D) for just a few months so I'm completely green hand and I'd be grateful for some examples :) What do you usually take with you on holidays?

Aaron Langley I would order the 55-250 is stm to go with your kit lenses. That's enough coverage that you won't miss a shot. Both are light and you can easily carry both.

Michał Kubalczyk I see that it's not expensive, so I'll definitely consider this one. Thanks!

agnieszka bladzik you really use telephoto on holidays??? I think I didn't use it at all on my holidays last year, maybe 1-2 times
@Michał where are you going? you already have your 50 - good for holidays portraits, I think something 25-50? I find myself using mainly 14-42 on holidays

Satoshi T For vacations, I think important thing for lens is lightweight and keep it you with other baggage. the shutter chances are suddenly come. no time to change lens. It is better to be attached to the camera the most useful, small and lightweight lens. as @agnieszka say, If you take a telephoto only occasionally, photos you want show as telephoto may be crop in the post-process.

Michał Kubalczyk To Barcelona. And as I said I was rather thinking about some wide-angle as the replacement for my current kit. I'm looking for something that will give me totally different view than my 50, so less than 30 I think (?). And it can be prime lens too, depends what's better

agnieszka bladzik so plenty of great architecture - i think 17-50 will be very useful, and you will not have to change it while walking across the city :)

Michał Kubalczyk I'm just wondering, 17-50 is not a big difference in contrast with my 18-55mm kit, right? Is it worth upgrading?

agnieszka bladzik if it's brighter maybe, but I forgot you got this kit lens

Mariusz Rzepkowski Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM ? optyczne.pl/197.1-Test_obiekty...

jokele This is my most used lens, especially during holidays.

Satoshi T It's Japanese site, but you can see pictures of this lens with APS-C sensor. sigma-photo.co.jp/lens/standar...

Michał Kubalczyk That will be very useful, thank you!

jokele This is another site, for "pixel peeping" with different lenses. A Polish version is also available. pixelpeeper.com/lenses/?lens=1...

Michał Kubalczyk I've made some research and I think that Canon 10-22 mm 3.5-4.5 is something that I was looking for, but it's a bit more expensive than I planned - do you guys know other similiar lenses that are worth recommendation? They can be more "flexible" if it's possible ;) or brighter?

Satoshi T You wish so wide angle. I think to recommend SIGMA 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM optyczne.pl/index.html?test=ob... , It is f/3.5 throughout the zoom range. But telephoto end is 20mm. Only 2mm but it is different in this range. About Canon 10-22mm, To be honest, I think it is a little bit old design (2006).

Michał Kubalczyk Yeah, I want to have wider possibilities ;) Awesome, thanks again!

Aaron Langley Canon EF-S 10-18 4.5-5.6 stm relatively affordable

Ian Prince Hey Michał. I understand your predicament as it's really hard to know ahead of time what fields of view "work" for one's photos. Only after buying some lenses do I now realise that I prefer 24mm over 34mm, for example. Maybe you could leave on you vacation with the lenses you own already own (your 50mm shots here are great!) and use the 18-55 to test what wide-angles work best by seeing how many photos you take at each of the zoom's focal lengths. And once you know that, buy a prime corresponding to that focal length....

Michał Kubalczyk I'm almost sure that my main lens still will be the 50. I already know a few places that I want to visit, so the only thing is to prepare for this. We'll see, I have some time to think about it :)
