Paweł Kadysz Sometimes the only way to fix bad tones, white balance, etc. is to turn the photo into black and white, and it shows. I don't like this kind of black and white photography.

But taking a photo in black and white is another thing. You need to play with contrast rather than with colors. I have never tried it since I really like when colors "pop". And I also take daily, family photos which in my opinion look a bit depressing when taken in black and white.

Dominik Ropela You're right. Photography was created to help us play memories. Black and white filter restricts us in this matter. However, it has a fantastic advantage. Adds photographs of mystery, uncertainty, and anxiety. It helps us in the extraction of emotions.

Adam Urbaniak Family photos in B&W would be in fact a little depressing also for me, but - on the other hand - I think patterns are looking better in B&W.
I think finding good B&W object is harder than (in example) nice object we can use as the contrast/theme for shot made in color, thats why its simply harder to find good B&W photo.

Dominik Ropela black and white filter does not fit everywhere. photography is a specific field, because the photographer must demonstrate a sense of aesthetics, must be able to choose the colors, show affection, and also be able to present it in the picture :)

Holger Konarski I agree with @dominik Ropela. B&W pictures do evoke emotions that in my opinion color photographs cannot. Of course, this all depends on the subject and your feelings toward the subject. There can be a lot of drama and mystery in B&W landscape photography, but also in portraiture. However, would I ever turn a beautiful sunrise/set into a B&W? Most likely not.

Dominik Ropela So sometimes, not every effect will suit all types of photography

jewels A lot of my all-time favorite photos by great artists are in B&W and I tend to favor it for very artistic pictures. On a personal note, the best advice I feel I was ever given about shooting in black & white is to take the photo with the monochromatic mode on in the camera, rather than change it to b&w later in post-prod. Not only did the pics end up looking better, but more than anything, by shooting and seeing the result immediately, it really helped me develop a more critical eye and pay much more attention to light angles and shadows. The results were particularly good with portraits. I haven't yet used this technique on Tookapic but really intend to. This is counter-intuitive to all photography advice I have ever received, but it really helped me learn and grow as a photographer.

Dominik Ropela Interestingly reasoning, I recommend the use of additional filters on the lens type cokin. Featured photos, for example, the green filter, turned the color B & W can give amazing results.

Michał Kubalczyk I think that sometimes black & white pics can tell you much more than the colour ones, but they have to be perfect in every detail - light and shadows, contrast, frame, everything. I didn't like them at first too, but now when I'm more interested in street photography I realised how awesome they can be.

Dominik Ropela I composed myself own theory of photography B & W, According to me this whole curiosity, mystery, niepwność photographs and your interest in this result stems from napatrzenia old black and white photos from the old days, which, contrary guise are really intriguing.

Jola I like the photos in black and white. Capture the imagination. It seems to me that it is not easy to make a good image in black and white

Michael Gatton It seems to me that it is not easy to make a good image - period. :-)

Dominik Ropela Photography black and white surprises us with its mystery. It is difficult, but its effects are certainly worth the money.

Gogi Golzman i like black & white photos .. the dramatic ones ...
in b\w shots .. you can emphasis emotions, feelings & a lot of mood.
i really think that personally my best shots are in black & white

Dominik Ropela Photo black and white, as opposed to the photograph in color. Do not distract from the content of photos, details colors

vera I'm not an expert of doing B&W pics... but when I see one, it sounds to me like a kind of minimalism. The colors are out and don't give their mood. So the emotion comes mainly out from the light and shadows. The beauty is issue from the forms, from the relief made by the light and the framing. Stripped of their colors, shapes become more important. Some portraits are really beautiful in B&W!

Dominik Ropela Such photographs are more real, they discover the details of an image, and emotions

Dominik Ropela Photography has many faces, the photographer is an artist who has to choose the appropriate face.

Magda G One of my favourite quotes about photography is Ted Grant's:
"“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!”.
I very often edit photos in both colours and bw and then discover something new about a particular frame which I haven't seen before - some texture, patern or a detail which is amplified when the colours are out..

Dominik Ropela Show less so that others can see more

tzachmost Personally, I love playing with light in b&w. Low light, too. And not only in studio, the feeling you get when taking that contrasty image of people on the street is just... different. It's up to you, what to show. I love that.

Dominik Ropela This is the photograph :) ... for showing that what you want. That's why I love her so - limit us only by the imagination

craig I decided to try my second year on Tookapic in black and white. It is still very much a learning process. Some shots I love others I think are just black and white pictures which may have been better in colour. I have found that cloud detail is improved with black and white.

Dominik Ropela I said it once, but I will say it again :) You're a master of the art of black and white
