Replacing an old P&S camera
Long story short - I can't stand my P&S camera anymore and I need to buy something better. I want to develop my skills in photography so I started to look for a new camera. The one that I liked is Canon EOS 100D with the EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. Can anyone tell me how this camera feels in use? Or maybe should I buy something completely different? Thanks in advance for every opinion.

If you shoot over 1,000 photos for a long time and there is no opportunity to charge battery during that time, I think that it is meaningful to select DSLR such as 100D. However, I think that DSLR is not suitable for daily Tookapic activity.
I recommend you compare the cameras you recommended from other members in this thread and Canon 100D look from the top. Since the DSLR has a mirror, it is thick and heavy so difficult to carry and to enter bags.
If you are a professional and you can use several cameras separately, I will not deny the DSLR. If you can carry with heavy baggage for shoot wild animals, football games and acrobatic ariplanes , Nikon and Canon 's DSLR and a telephoto lens like a cannon are effective choices.
It is also good to just take lightweight F1.4 prime lens and snap in town and field. The prime lens of the DSLR is inexpensive, the bokeh and DOF obtained by F1.4 can not be obtained at others.
However, especially for daily Tookapic activities, I strongly recommend to try a combination of a thin, lightweight camera, bright prime lenses such as F1.8, instead of heavy DSLR and a dark zoom lens.
vividcolourfabric Ok, now I have more time to reply. I'm no pro but I know what the exposure triangle and composition (and stuff) means. I'm just a student (and I'm not even studying photography) so I have a tight budget. Seems I have to save some now. Anyway, thank you very much for your recommendations. Really appreciated.
Bolesław I have very old canon 450d and faced similar problem. Would love to jump on 80d, e-m5/10 mkII or fuji system although with good prime lense thats very expensive and way beyond my current budget. Went with Panasonic Lumix LX100. While not cheap it is extremely versatile and still twice or three times less then other options coupled with good lenses. You can explore similar options of advanced compact cameras like Canon G15 and etc. Or like others suggested you can find good deals on used Sony A6000 nowadays.
What I got with LX100 is a M4/3 sensor, good high ISO, stabilization, full manual controls and very good wide bright lense with impressive macro capabilities. If you go with DSLR lenses with good macro capabilities and optical stabilisation are insanely expensive.
To match the capabilities LX100 gave me I would need to spent x2 or even x3 the budget. Surely I would like to upgrade to interchangable lense body in the future. Although I prefer to have decent system now then save and build it up for two or three more years :) Keep learning in the meantime and discover what are my true needs in terms of the gear
I am fairly impressed with the switch. DSLR feels great although it is painful to carry with you everywhere. Additionally with small camera you seem more harmless to other people around you and there is much smaller mental barrier to take pictures in public space.
With DSRL I would not take photo like this:
"Beetle"
I would either not have proper Macro lense yet (outside of budget) or not have it with me on a casual walk (unless you go everywhere with a huge bag)...
Bolesław On a side note.... Take your time to check what other people are using on tookapic. Especially from first 100 in the ranking.
I got blown away discovering tookapic.com/abladzik used E-PL5 (fairly cheap to acquire now) with single bright prime lense for majority of recent photos. Now this hits my mind everytime I wish I had more gear...
There are also plenty of people here doing mind blowing photos with P&S cameras or decent mobile phones.

Aaron Langley I would first consider do you want a system camera? Lenses quickly add up. A bundle with both a standard and telephoto zoom can help you initially, but these lenses can become unsatisfying. Could a newer point and shoot meet your needs?
How many photos do you take at a time? Spare batteries add cost. A mirrorless will offer less battery life, but similar feel to a point and shoot. What would you like to shoot more of? A micro 3/4 system can make wildlife photography easier due to the 2x crop, where an APS-C sensor requires a more expensive lens to get the same reach. An older full frame camera will work wonderfully for landscapes and even low light and cost about as much as a new APS-C camera.
Brand doesnt really matter as much as format. If you can, get to a stocked camera store and try some out. Personally I would look at one of the Canon Rebel (called xxxD elsewhere in the world) bundles during a sale, or a Sony A6000 series camera.
Side note: Sony lenses can get ridiculous quickly.
vividcolourfabric Well, I can spend at most 500 USD. The light I can get from my lens is from f/2.6 to f/5.5 so not-so-bad-but-can-be-better. The main thing I got upset about is that manual mode in my camera means setting the ISO and the white balance. Nothing more. No MF, no exposure time, no aperture settings. That's what really makes me mad.
Kazzi For 500 USD You should be able to get new Olympus E-PL7 or used OM-D E-M10 - and the second one is really worht it.

vividcolourfabric Thanks for your efforts. But you know what? This isn't my first camera and I'm not a total newbie. I just want something more advanced. I understand the theory but don't have a proper tool. To tell the truth, I wasn't very keen on photography before. But since the end of the 2016, I started to invest my time to learn the basics. I can't say I'm total pro now but I know far more than any average user of the P&S. And that's why I'm asking you, guys.

It is not about P&S. I switched from Canon 500D to Olympus EPL5 in 2013 and it changed my photo life. Mirrorless cameras (eg. Olympus, Panasonic) have all manual/P/A modes that you need and are much better choice than cheap DSLR with kit lens and you can take them everywhere in a pocket.

As I wrote earlier, I'm a student and I can't afford the brand new equipment just for a hobby. As Kazziz wrote, I'll try to look for some used E-M10s Mk I. But, once again, thank you for your time.

Glad we helped :) You might look also for used E-M5's, since it's almost five years from the camera's launch and I saw some a while ago at olx.pl for riddiculous prices :)
And, as all OM-D cameras, it has a really long service support.
Satoshi T The other day, I was refused when I tried asking Canon to inspect my 50D. Service for 50D is already finished. Is 50D so old?
Kazzi It is. It's been almost nine years... But official service shouldn't even be allowed to refuse inspecting the camera. Especially in Japan, cameras motherland!
