English or Polish ???
I've been trying to follow the latest talk these days about tookapic not being free anymore but most of it is in Polish. I understand that Poland is where tookapic is based but I thought that this wonderful website and association was international, open to everybody around the world and that English was the chosen language to communicate in, no ??

I think what @Kateli means is that when we have a Talk posted in English posting answer in Polish might be seen as rude.
Tomek Zimnocho Your English is pretty good. I know how frustrating can be inability to express what you want, but usin a language is the only certain (and free) way to improve it :)
Basia On toocapic I am renewing my acquaintance with English, such a completely unexpected effect. I was supposed to study here only photography. I am less and less assisting myself with the google translator

Kazzi When I was doing an exhibition last year, I had to dig up all of my 365 photos, look at them and read the descriptions... and I got terrified, how poor my English was in the beginning! It was totally unexpected - I still do lots of mistakes, but tookapic helped me improve my English along my photos, and that's a great effect!

Jestem w bardzo podobnej sytuacji. Moja znajomość angielskiego pozwala na zrozumiałą konwersację jednak na napisanie czegokolwiek nie pozwala. Korzystałem z translatora, niestety przekręca, odwraca znaczenie wypowiedzi/słów w taki sposób, że przestałem to robić (parokrotnie musiałem edytować opisy na sugestie innych ). Jak widać na przykładzie @Satoshi można jakoś do tego wyrozumiale podejść ;) Brawo za pomysł wprowadzenia tylko angielskiej wersji strony, myślę że ograniczy to ilość korzystających z tooka. Translator w dzisiejszych czasach jest tak podstawowym narzędziem, że odpowiedź w wątku po angielsku - w języku polskim ja nie uważam za niegrzeczną.
I am in a very similar situation. My knowledge of English allows for understandable conversations, however, it does not allow me to write anything. I used the translator, unfortunately, it turns, decodes the meaning of the statement in such a way that I stopped doing it. As you can see on the example of satosz, one can approach this for some reason. I am applauding for the idea of introducing only the English version of the page, I think that it will limit the number of co-opers. Translator nowadays is such a basic tool that you can answer in English in English - I do not think I'm rude in Polish.
Paweł Kadysz Yes. Translating the site to polish was probably a mistake. It was done in good will, but the result was, well... dissapointing. I'm trying to figure out how to fix that. Any suggestions are welcome.
Tomek Zimnocho I’m not sure how it’s working, but if I remember correctly Polish is set automatically for users from Poland. Setting English as default language and leaving Polish as an option to find in settings as a first step and adding couple more languages in the future whenever financial situation allows. German and French to start with I would suggest:)

I think as follows. When a new user comes first, even if it is a user from Poland, the default language should be English.
If you usually using the Internet, I think you can understand menus and elements even in English.
Perhaps it seems to be appreciated by the user that help and guidance are multilingualized rather than menus.

When I started 365 project, the language of the site and the language everyone used were English. I guess many of the members usually use Polish and French, but here they seemed to be trying to use English. That made here unique international atmosphere. As a result I was able to stay here long time.
When you write in English -which is different from your own language- , fine nuances may disappear... Still, I want you to use English. At the same time, do not forget that the top way of communicating here is 'Photograph' rather than words.
I think it is nice to express greetings and admiration with the words of the photographer's language.
However, when we discuss the way of site in 'Talks', I think you should write in English even if you use google translator.
jazzie if I read this I feel that it would be nice to have some auto-translate-option, so those who feel really uncomfortable with writing in english can write in polish, but those viewing tookapic in english automatically get to see the translated version (and vice versa)
Karolina Oksiędzka Well... you have google translate. I use it regularly to check my spelling. It’s not hard to open a new tab in the browser ;).
Paweł Kadysz This can be implemented quite easily, but will add another monthly fee for us. We’ll see how it works out with paid accounts in new year.
Katrina Yu The Chrome browser has a "translate to english" option on their right+click menu! It's absolutely helpful.

Karolina Oksiędzka I was rather thinking of writing the coments in english than translating polish ones :/. You are right It's too time consuming.
Rafal For Mac users there is an app called Grammarly which online check the grammar of our written words. I am not sure is it such think for Windows users, too

Kazzi Works on Windows, but if Your browser underlines all English words, it's about five or six clicks to ADD a language for the built-in spell-checker. And it works quite well!

Rafal @Kateli note that entry information from Pawel is in english. Of course I understood that with no problems, but this important information should be in polish language too. There are many polish people there, so some probably didn't understand some complicated things. There is a big discussion below, and some people start speaking polish because of the emotions and their native language. I think also that for people from abroad the price for staying here is rather cheap, For some of us this could be too expensive, so people are writing some explanations, and try to discuss...
tania English is not my mother tongue. And of course I often cannot express myself in the different talks as I would have done it in French. It's sometimes a frustration, but that's the way it is. Anyway, maybe translating in English could help to have a distance with our emotions. It could also be inadequate to say everything here, even more when it's very emotional. Tookapic is actually a Polish website but it has been designed to be international. It's why when we have a specific talk that only concerns "Swiss Tookafriends", we write it in English. And that's the beauty of it : we received then international support and thoughts because people feel included. And that's for me the point : keeping an inclusive community.

gerlos I think that is somehow lucky that a language as easy to learn as English is the most used on the Internet, and it's awesome that English is the main language in awesome international communities like this. I love that I can use English to talk with people from all around the world!
It could be worse, there are languages that are a lot more difficult to learn than English: for example, Italian, my first language, and French are a lot more complicated, and languages difficult like them can be a major obstacle to the exchange of experiences and expertise from people from all around the world.
Sure, automatic translation services such as Google Translate could help a lot, but they are far from perfect, and using them you always feel like a stranger, never at ease. And mistakes and misunderstandings can be enormous.
Another positive aspect of using an intermediate language like English is that before writing you need to stop and think, and maybe read a second time before posting. Thinking more is always a good thing! ;-)
Maybe it could be a good idea to put a nice reminder somewhere, saying just that Tookapic is an international community, and if you want to be nice with the broader community making easier for others to participate, it could be a good idea to write (also) in English. :-)
vividcolourfabric Funny, I'm trying to learn Italian now. As for now, it's not so hard but I'm taking obvious basics now. Probably it'll get harder later. ;)
gerlos Italian it's full of tricky declensions, conjugations, misleading and irregular words and rules that are sometimes broken without any apparent reason... but I love it anyways! I'm sure you'll love it too, :-)

Margie I speak English and formerly was an English teacher. I am amazed by everyone's proficiency in English even when it is not their native language. It's interesting that English is regarded as easy to learn. Some of my students in the USA seemed to have more difficulty than you all do! :)) I have no trouble at all understanding the intent of writers and even find occasional little blips in the expression charming. And when in Polish, I just cut and paste and pop it into Google translator.
Tomek Zimnocho It is relatively easy to learn for European languages speakers. English is a mix of Germanic and Romance vocabulary and has quite simple (basic, when you want to learn properly it's different story) grammar and good coverage in American and British films and music, so most of the world can hear it every day :). Another problem is living in a non-English community and not using language even while you can. There are many Polish immigrants in the USA and UK who can't speak English because they simply don't need to and I'm guessing that it applies to other communities as well.
And again - best way to learn and maintain language skills is to use language, so let's use English here :)

Basia I think and feel Polish, I can not express certain things in another language, I learned English almost 20 years ago, I forgot a lot. This is the reason why I wrote in Polish. For me it's also frustrating that I do not understand everything when someone writes in a language that is strange to me
