Out of beta?

I can't believe tookapic is out of beta!!!! Big changes always seem to happen when I am on vacation. It's not fair. Anyways, I can't wait to try out all of the new features!!! If you like the new update, or have something to say about it, post a comment below.

Jennifer I"m so excited to see how everything goes! Here's the blog post about all the new changes!

Jesse Lind Thank you! :)

Jennifer I agree about the new photo stream. I have an easier time keeping track of where I am when they're in neater rows. I like the smooth look of this, but it throws me off a bit. Same reason I can't handle Pinterest.

Paweł Kadysz I totally get what you mean with the new mosaic layout. But give it a week. I'm pretty sure you'll get used to it. It's much more common and popular way to show content than square pics we had before.

Jesse Lind I was just thinking about having 'normal' forums, and I think it would be a lot easier and better. I also agree that it is hard to find your way around with the new layout. Also, for me, it takes about 5 minutes to load the pictures when you scroll down. But, I'm not saying I don't like the new updates! They are very cool, and I can tell a lot of thought went into them. :)

Kevin Drum I think the mosaic layout looks cool, and I intend to exploit it shamelessly with tall images, but I see what Patrick means. If you like to go through all the pictures methodically, the endless mosaic layout is more difficult than even rows and pagination.

I wish there was something to help me go back and tag old photos quicker since tags will be much more relevant now that potential licensees may want to search them.

I would also like to add that I really like the picture of the old guy in his workshop that is displayed during tookapic maintenance. Please don't change that.

Alicja I totally agree with U @kevin ! I love that "maintenance" pic :)

Kasper Mikiewicz Try panoramic photos ;)

Ian Prince I just did ;)

JudithO Agree that the new look is nice, but now all the portrait direction/tall images stand out against the landscape direction images. I wish they were the same size, the landscape direction pictures now look kind of small and are getting less noticed maybe?

Łukasz Krebok And now it doesnt look as good as before on main page :(

Ian Prince I feel the same way as you Judith regarding the portrait and panorama crops are kind of large in proportion to the more common lanscape crop... Not an easy geometric equation to solve if you abandon square thumbnails...

agnieszka bladzik the panorama photos on the main page looks great, but if you open them on separate page they look 10 time worse. I would like to have the option to see them bigger like another click and they are full screen or sth. I would like to have full screen option to any photo in fact - going to wish list topic with that :D

Julie Perry Yes initially I found the mosaic scrolling different but as my partner pointed out if you right click and open image in new tab you can come back to where you were scrolling easily. Agree on the maintenance page too- a cool page. New scrolling will be very good for tall images as Kevin says and I like that . The new streak change does make the feel less threatening . Love the selling addition great incentive.

JudithO Yes figured this trick out as well ;). But maybe the issue @Roger mentioned above could be fixed? Have not tried yet browsing the site on my phone but this might be an issue there.

Shenandoah I have an Android phone and Chrome. I can long-press an image and a menu pops up to open the link in a new tab. So I can still do effectively the same thing. I don't know if other phone/browser combinations can do the same thing, but you might check. (BTW, on a PC you can also middle click or click the scroll wheel, depending on your mouse type, to send the link to a new tab without using a menu.)

Roger My issue with the new layout is that once you "load more photos" you lose the browser back button functionality because it goes back to the first set of images and not the set of photos you were last looking at.

Jesse Lind The question is, who will buy your photos? I can't really buy any, because, well, I don't have much money. But have any of you bought any photos? I mean, who would want to spend $2.50 for a picture unless it is totally outstanding. The problem is, we don't have many totally outstanding pictures on the website. My thought was what if we added more features, if you buy the photo.
I don't know, just an idea. If I'm totally wrong (witch I can easily be) please reply!

Paweł Kadysz You're not supposed to buy photos from each other - that would be kind of weird, because there is really no need for a photographer to buy a photo from another photographer.

Some of the photos here are very high quality and would be useful for graphic or web designers. I, myself am a web designer and I spent thousands of dollars on stock photos over the years to use in my designs.

We're now in the process of collecting and categorizing your photos and soon we'll have a beautiful catalogue of high quality stock photos that we'll be showing to people who look for such images.

You guys just need to keep your 365 project going. We'll handle the rest ;)

Łukasz Krebok If you will run long enough your project you will have skills to take outstanding shots :) Edit:
And blogers also buy stock photos, lots of them if they want to make good content and dont have photography as their passion

Shenandoah Just a word of caution, at least to those of us in the USA - many places do not allow you to sell pictures without a special permit. You can only take pictures for personal use. This includes most zoos, museums, sporting events, national parks, and more. So be careful if you select some of your images for sale! Make sure you have permission to do so.

Jesse Lind Hmm... Thank you for telling me this. I'll have to look into it. :)

Jennifer That is good to know, thank you.

Jennifer Just one other small thing I noticed is that at the bottom of the page, it no longer has how many users, but instead says something about Projects. It's currently at 436 as of this post. What is this new counter counting?

Jesse Lind I think it's counting how many active users there are using tookapic and uploading photos.

Paweł Kadysz @Jesse is right. It's the number of users that actually started the project. I think that number of all users is irrelevant.

Jennifer Ohkay, that definitely makes more sense. I used to flip through the pages of people and see that there were only a few pages before I got to countless ones of people who had maybe one photo, or none. Good call Jesse!

Paweł Kadysz The question is - should you really crop the photo so it looks good in the mosaic view? I think you should just crop like you used to. We'll be working on the mosaic view to make it better. We'll probably change how panoramas show up.

Ian Prince Thought you might have that planned ;) Until then I'll shot exclusively pano shots ;)

P.S. Just kidding!

Jesse Lind What if we had something so that you could edit your picture before you upload it to tookapic.

Paweł Kadysz What do you mean exactly? A photo editor? I guess we could think about implementing Aviary developers.aviary.com/features but if decided to go for it, it wouldn't happen very quickly anyway.

Right now we have a long, long list of improvements and priority features.

Shenandoah Now that EXIF data doesn't matter, you can try fotor, which is a pretty easy to use photo editor available online for free. I use it for my pictures that I put on Facebook. (Unfortunately, it strips EXIF, which is why it wasn't possible to use it here before.)

Ian Prince I imagine you do, and imagine it might be frustrating at times....

Take your time, no pressure from me at least :)

In the meantime I'll contribute by just taking a photo a day :)

Jesse Lind Yes, I don't mean to rush you at all! I was just throwing around some ideas.

Jennifer If you do implement streamlined editing, I would fully support Aviary. It's my favorite!

Shenandoah I just noticed, even though "streak" has been renamed on our individual pages, it's still called streak under the Photographers menu. Might cause confusion for newcomers.

Ian Prince Is it just me, or have you just tweaked the mosaic layout?

Looks much better to me now. Or maybe I'm just getting used to it, lol.

Paweł Kadysz We haven't changed it. It probably looked weird for the most of us the day it was changed. We're getting used to it, and it turns out that mosaic is not that bad idea and actually look ok.

Paweł Kadysz Thank you. Still few minor issues to fix, but we think it looks much better now. And we finally fixed how panoramas look.

Paweł Kadysz No, sorry.
