tookapic Feature Suggestions

I'm not sure if this is a valid use of the Talks page, but I would really like this to be a place where we can suggest features for the site. That way the developers know what the users want, and we can upvote whichever features we want to see added.

To suggest a feature, just add a comment with a brief description of a feature you want. Then people can vote for your feature if they like it. Click on the "Best comments" link to see the top suggestions.

Ben Lind Liking photos from home page: I would like to be able to "like" photos from the main page list. Perhaps this would happen if you click on the heart icon underneath an individual picture. Otherwise, you could make a heart icon part of the title overlay that displays when you hover over a photo.

Josef Murphy I can't seem to "heart" this, so this is a comment to second this idea.

Ben Lind What can't you heart? My comment or this post itself?

Paweł Kadysz Any kind of discussion regarding tookapic is more than welcome here. So thanks for posting this. We're looking forward to seeing more of your suggestions.

As for being able to like from homepage, we thought about that few weeks ago, and eventually ditched the idea. Liking photos from homepage can be kind of risky, since you can crop the thumbnail. Think about it. I can post a really bad image and crop just the decent part of it. Would you actually like it? Also what if someone posted a good picture but wrote something really bad in the description? Would you still like it?

And yes, comment likes are currently broken, should be fixed on Monday.

Kasper Mikiewicz Comment likes fixed.

Ben Lind Yes, the cropping problem is what first came to mind as a downside. I guess it's a cost-benefit analysis problem. I still think I would like to have the option to like photos from the list page.

Flo I'd love the download function to be available on mobile. And I can't wait for the promised iOS app!

Ian Prince On the subject of iOS, I don't seem to be able to upload photos to tookapic from Safari on my iPad running iOS 8.1.2.

tookapic says there is no EXIF data, but the "EXIF Viewer" says there is.

@Paweł : and idea what's going on?

Jennifer I would also be delighted with an Android app. Everything gets ported to iOS and it's infuriating when Android users get left in the cold. :( The website is beautifully designed though, so it's not too much of an issue for now. ^.^ Well done!

Paweł Kadysz We're working on an iOS app at the moment. We'll be adding Android support later.

Kasper Mikiewicz There's only one developer. No new functions next week, only code refactoring but after that some really nice functions will come :)

Ben Lind No worries man, I applaud you for the great work you've done on the site so far. This will just be a good reference page in case you run out of ideas. :)

Ben Lind I wish the photo crop box would start as a full square (touching the top and bottom of my photo) instead of being padded by 10%.

What I mean is that when you go to upload a photo, it asks you to choose a crop selection. The default selection is centered on the photo, which is great, but it is padded on top and bottom by about 10%. I always end up dragging the top and bottom handles so that the crop goes all the way to the top and bottom, and I wish that was the default state. I hope this makes sense. Maybe this could be a preference, like "save as my default crop"?

Ben Lind It would be nice if comments photo descriptions would support basic Markdown formatting (maybe just bold, italic, underline, and urls).

Paweł Kadysz I've been thinking about that for quite some time too. I'll add it to the feature list. Right now, only the photo description and "talks" description fields support markdown.

Ben Lind I wish the search bar would search for photographers as well as photographs. Currently there's no good way to search for a specific photographer.

Paweł Kadysz This is a major update. Definitely on our to-do list, but it'll take some time. There is a workaround - you can always use Google for that: goo.gl/KUu27J

Peter Wish there were a rebounds/playoffs (like on dribbble) for photos. For example. When somebody published a cool photo and I want to try his/her idea I can upload a rebound someday. Great for those days when you have no idea for photo and want to test your skills.

Ben Lind If I click on a picture on the home page list, I would like the forward and backward arrows to cycle through photos from people I follow. Right now they cycle through photos by one photographer, and this makes sense when I arrived at a photo from a user's page. However, if I arrive at a photo from the home page, I think the arrows should move through the photos in whatever list I was just viewing.

Jonathan Vivaas Kise I've been away for 3 days with only access to my iphone. Now I lost my streak, because I can't upload the files, even though my rawfiles is the dates I haven't uploaded. Any workaround for this?

Paweł Kadysz No. You can only upload with one day delay. I said that many times before, but I'll say it again. Having a longer break than 1 or 2 days leads to abandoning the project. Every 365 guide states that you should upload your photos as soon as possible after you take them. If you want to upload once in a while, there's flickr, 500px, tumblr, etc. But tookapic is different. It was designed to help you get consistent, to develop a habit. And uploading once every few days is not a habit.

In one of the upcoming updates we'll set up a huge red banner for every new user that will explain how things work here.

Shenandoah Hi, I understand your point here, but wondered if you would consider allowing a "vacation mode" that can be set ahead of time? I get that you don't want someone to forget for two weeks, then upload a bunch of pictures to make up for it. Or to forget a few days out of each week on a regular basis. That defeats the whole point of the site. But could there be a way to say ahead of time: I'll be going on vacation off-the-grid and will upload all pics from this period on X date when I return? (I do this about once/year, usually in a remote developing country like Malawi or Peru where I don't even have electricity, nevermind internet or cell access.) That would mean people have to plan ahead and be aware they will not have access for those days, rather than just forgetting randomly and trying to catch up. And it would still meet your "as soon as possible" criteria. You could even limit it to only allow vacations maybe twice/year so it doesn't get overly abused. Just a thought. As I said, I get your reasoning for requiring it every day. A little flexibility for times off-the-grid would just be helpful for those of us who like to travel to non-traditional locations.

Paweł Kadysz @Shenandoah we're working to implement a very similar system. We even called it a "vacation mode" :)

Lukasz Dec I think it would be nice to see bigger photos. Maybe a fullscreen view on click?

Ben Lind Yes! This would be perfect.

Thom Roberts Possibly encrypting(?) the photos we upload? Even if you chose not to have them available to download anyone can still right click to save them.

Paweł Kadysz You can post them with the watermark - which will make them useless for anyone to download. Also, on the website we only show smaller version of your photos. The full size pic is safe on our servers and unless you check "available for download" it won't be available to anyone.

Blocking right mouse button clicks on photos won't stop anyone who wants to download your photos illlegaly but can seriously hurt user experience for everyone else.

Marcin Brzeski Can you bring back the share button under the picture?

Paweł Kadysz That's already done. Facebook and Twitter buttons are back on the photo page. Happy sharing! :)

Paweł Kadysz @marcin we'll check it. Can you tell me which photo you were going to share?

Ian Prince Yeh, I seem to gave the same problem with FB sharing with an "Access Forbidden" error.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13...

Not really an issue for me, but thought it might help having an additional data point.

Ian Prince Fixed just 10 minutes after posting. Well done High on Pixels!

Marcin Brzeski On the top menu bar next to "Talks" there is a number indicating that there is something new added. However it's difficult to find the new posts/comments on the Talks page. Can you make this new content stand out a little more?

Paweł Kadysz We'll figure something out.

Jennifer I'm not sure if this would work out with the format of the site, but it would be cool if there were a calendar section with a thumbnail of each photo on the corresponding day that it was taken. It would make finding specific ones a lot easier too once people start having many photos on here.

Marcin Brzeski It looks like you have some issues with https certificate. Chrome on Android is showing a warning message 'err_cert_authority_invalid' when I'm trying to access the site. The desktop version of Chrome doesn't have any issues with the site.

Paweł Kadysz It should be fixed first thing tomorrow.
