tookapic idea and rules

I wonder about the sense of participating in a project in which participants insert in February photos taken during the summer. They are often beautiful but how does this relate to the idea and rules of tookapic ?

Paweł Kadysz We talked about it 2 weeks ago here: facebook.com/groups/1221946781... - no clear conclusion came out of it though.

Paweł Kadysz But you're right. Posting photos with faked dates is pointless and is nowhere near real 365 project. But on the other hand it's just lying to yourself. I just try not to follow people who clearly don't follow the rules.

Hanna Gawrychowska Thank you - yes, you're right, it is the simplest solution

FlyteWizard You also got to realize that people live in different climates throughout the world.

For example, I live in a beautiful place that's green 90% of the time, however last week it snowed sooo much, but three days ago the snow melted within the hour.

Hanna Gawrychowska oh Dominique
I realize and I don't write about it and ... I envy you warm climate

Gogi Golzman the same here
i live in israel.. the're days that look like a pure summer . and days that don"t

agnieszka bladzik we all know that, yet you see people shooting winter one day, and next day uploading autumn photo, of a place you know thats it's in poland. There was this one guy uploading photos from Gdynia Tall Ships Races in October "Sky flowers", yet last Gdynia Tall ships was 3 years ago. sunny and summery bialystok on 31st of December is impossible "Odkopane wspomnienie lata v. alpha". it's not a point of this project. I don't mind people 'backfilling' missed days with proper date. but posting photos from diferent day just to keep the streak is not ok. and even if the title states it is just 'a memory of summer' I would prefere to see someone's 'sreak photo' of anything done that day not good photo but done in different day. I tend to unfollow such people, not like such photos etc. but still it's just my opinion

Gogi Golzman yeah i guess you're right
i think this is pointless
they're missing the point the challenge and the fun.
as long as most of us do what we need to do. its ok

Satoshi T I also understand immediately that if it is different from the current Tokyo. In order to have the rule kept, should I comment "This picture is wonderful, but this is not a picture of yesterday..." ?

Kazzi Maybe there should be an option "Report to mod that it's not taken on that day", after which a message about that photo will be automatically send, askind and reminding the user about the idea of tookapic? :>

Marcin N Woźniak I really don't care.
Tookapic project is for ME. It has to motivate ME to take photos every day. If someone else don't see it that way, who am I to judge him?
In Poland there is proverb "Storm in glass of water". I think, this "problem" is from this type of storms category :)
If I don't like how someone uploads photos, then I don't follow him. End of the story ;)

Grace I would agree that it is a personal project and the rules are really just guidelines, but personally I'm only uploading photos taken on that day.. and probably wouldn't follow someone that isn't following that as well

Margie I find I would be disappointed in myself if I did not follow the expectation of Take One, Post One on the same day. This is my second year of Tookapic and I have set new goals for myself such as reaching the 500th photo etc. I decided to not do a streak this year and instead will experiment more and recover some of my fun passion in clicking the shutter. I still follow the guidelines of taking and posting one on the same day but skip days. I value being part of the Tookapic community.

Grace Yes I thought I would stop after a year but I thought I'd miss everyone too much so I'm still here. Not as worried about of my photo isn't that wonderful every day, and if I've only done a cellphone snap now

agnieszka bladzik one more question is should such photos be featured?

Paweł Kadysz Starting today, we're now monitoring the "not legit 365" photos. It's been 3 hours and current record is now a photo from 730 days before.

The question is - do you as users want to be able to see who is "cheating"?

It might be surprising. It is for me at least.

tania Haha.... controling society... if you think it's good for Tookapic atmosphere so go for it but I don't believe I need to know who's cheating. I try to focus on my project and it's already difficult 😂😂😂

Paweł Kadysz You're right. It is kind of depressing.

agnieszka bladzik how it's working? based on exif?

Paweł Kadysz Yes. If the date in the EXIF doesn't match the date you assign the photo to - it's counted as cheating.

Also. We have a new record: 3241 days. It'll be hard to beat :D

Hanna Gawrychowska Paweł
I'm curious - what happens when someone puts such a photo - where and what to see

for instance tookapic.com/photos/283181

jazzie And what happens with pics without exif? Pics taken with my iphone 4s don't have dates in them. And sometimes during photoshopping dates get lost as well, no idea about how to avoid this 😳. So users could be identified as cheaters without ever having cheated...!

Paweł Kadysz Nothing happens. The user is listed in our private list of people not following the rules of 365 projects. We do not delete the photo. We're not going to publish the list.

We'll probably add an option to only show "legit" pics and ignore the ones with the date changed. You'll be able to turn it on and off in your Account Settings page.

For now I can tell you that the pic you mentioned was actually taken in June... 2015 :/

Paweł Kadysz @jazzie We are not able to check the date photo was taken if the file doesn't have the EXIF data. Those photos are not on the list.

As for the Photoshop erasing the EXIF - if you use "Save for Web..." or "Export as... " to save your file - the data will be erased. You need to use "Save As... " and choose JPG as file format.

Also - if you copy the image between Photoshop documents - only the image data is copied. EXIF is lost in that case as well.

blueone Oh my, I realised I am probably on the list because of that (not so good) photo: "Rush" - it was taken the day I declared but I was so badly in packing rush, I forgot that taking battery out of a camera to charge it will reset date to fabric. So 2247 days (was I your record for some time? or only newly added photos are monitored?). I think that there are cases like mine (which I'm ashamed of) and if the photo looks like taken the day it's posted - it should be fine or at least not so blamed. However I don't like (also literally) clearly "not legit" photos.

agnieszka bladzik @Paweł can you share % of photos without exif, the general number i mean

Paweł Kadysz At the moment of posting this comment it's 14,25%.

Ian Prince And the percentage of photos where the EXIF date does not match the tookapic date?

Paweł Kadysz No idea. We started checking those today in the afternoon. So far, around 11-12%. Not that bad.

Ian Prince Ok, thanks for sharing that figure. It would be interesting to see if there is a historical trend in the percentage over time.

Paweł Kadysz I expect nothing will change until we start doing something about it. I know some people simeply don't understand the idea of 365 projects.

Ian Prince I think allowing the date to be changed when uploading a photo might lead new users to think that changing the date is actually ok. It would be interesting to see how the percentage of falsely dated photo changes if it was not possible in the UI. My feeling is that a much smaller percentage of users would actually bother to explicitly re-date the photo's EXIF before uploading.

Paweł Kadysz It's been like that for first few weeks of tookapic. The rules were very strict. No photos without EXIF were allowed. And if the date in EXIF didn't match the day - tookapic wouldn't accept the photo.

Users bounced like crazy.

I think it's more of the educating part and explaining that posting random photos from years before is pointless on tookapic. It's like uploading a photo to YouTube. You can do it. But what for?

I'll be looking for a UX writer to help me come up with a onboarding explanation of the idea.

agnieszka bladzik yep, remember that, as a begginer you may not have idea what exif even is, why it was deleted just by saving photo etc. that was my case - but I learnt. having some rules/processes/technical stuff explain in simple words for sure will help people to follow the idea. it's also good that you can upload with delay of one day. I was leaving some events at the begging just to upload the photo. funny times :)

Bolesław What if exif date is being displayed as part of meta data (could be extended exif secion although I know UX consideration come in a way).
- Those who want to cheat will always be able to manipulate manualy anyway
- Those who are not aware about wrong date set on the camera may get help from others in the comments
- Those who simply missed the whole 365 idea will get pointed to it in the comments as well.

Ian Prince On of the best things about tookapic is how supportive the community is. My concern with pointing out incorrectly dated photos might encourage negative comments, something tookapic is fortunately free from.

Ian Prince @Paweł ok, I'm assuming then that the photo upload will still allow changing the date to minimize users bouncing. Is it there (the upload UX) where you imagine adding a "educational" message informing users that maybe they're missing out the benefits of daily photography?

Bolesław @Ian good point...

Satoshi T When member were few, members might have been confused by strict rules. Now the situation has changed. If we specialize this site "We are group especially enjoy everyday Tookapic!" we can return strict rule that "Upload the day, emergency for the next day". I have an idea for film photographer without Exif. If a member checks the option "I am shooting on analog film", checking it will result in a UI that allows to enter dates when uploading Exif less data. :)

alecarolo Hello guys. I was recently at the tookapic. I really do not follow the rules. I made this clear by posting the EXIF. Reading the messages here I understand the intention of the project 365 days. I only have 4% of photos, just over 200 views and 26 followers. But I decided to stop here. I do not pretend to be a rulebreaker, despite defending freedom of artistic expression. But to express myself, I have instagram, facebook and other social networks. It was interesting to understand the profile of people so far from my reality that they are here at the tookapic. Many talents. I do not have time currently, but soon I plan to return to tookapic able to follow the rules. I will leave my profile active for a few days. Then I'll erase it. If anyone is interested in getting to know my work, you can go to alecarolo.com (Instagram and facebook: alecarolo). Thanks to the creators and congratulations for the initiative. Bye.

Ian Prince Thanks Ale for sharing your thoughts on tookapic. I totally respect your position on freedom and artistic expression. I also admire you honesty and integrity by saying you're stopping. Looking forward to seeing more of your photography when you return. All the best to you in the meantime.
