Getting tookapic known

Hi guys, I've been watching how many tookapic users we have been getting lately and it seems like the numbers are dwindling. What I'm wondering is how can people find out about tookapic? We have gotten the most members on January 1st and 2nd. What happened on those days? How did the word get out about this website? For the future, I was wondering what will happen and how can we get the word out about this awesome website? Thanks everyone! Jesse

Paweł Kadysz On January 1st we launched a small Facebook campaign advertising tookapic as a great new year resolution. We got few hundred new users in just two days.

But very few of them stayed for longer. That's because we made some really bad user experience mistakes while designing the site. It's terribly unforgiving and to actually upload your first photo you need to follow a lot of rules. Those who already use the site for a week or more get used to it. But this is discouraging for most of newcomers.

Hopefully this is going to change on May 19th. That's when we'll get out of beta and release version 1.0.0 of tookapic. Huge amount of new features. A lot of fixes (you have no idea how many bugs we actually fixed).

As for helping promoting the site. Share the link on Facebook or Twitter. Tell your friends about it. Share the pics you upload to tookapic (we know the FB sharing sometimes doesn't always work). If you have a blog, write about the site. Nothing more I can think of. But please, do this after May 19th, when the site is much more friendly to the newcomers ;)

Thank you for being concerned, @Jesse we really appreciate it.

Jesse Lind Yes, wherever I am, I always tell people about this site. I'm really excited about getting out of beta and for tookapic 1.0.0!! I would love to help out with any problems you might have, so please notify me if you have any problems with the site!

Paweł Kadysz The way the stats (streak, etc.) work will change a bit with the new version of tookapic which we hoped to release on 19th of May but I'm not sure if we'll be able to. The accountant is keeping the red light on the release. I never expected we'll be stopped by bureaucracy and paperwork. And this is really frustrating because we have a new, shiny version ready to show you.

BTW. the photo doesn't have to be posted on the day it was taken. We allow one day delay without resetting your streak. That means you can upload yesterday's pic today and still keep your streak. But as I said - this should not be a problem anymore once we release the new version.

agnieszka bladzik for me it's like a mastery how or why some photos are featured. It's neither the mostly liked, or mostly viewed photo of the day. I'm quite surprised with few choices. Not positively suprised

Ian Prince Hi Ann!

thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

Yeh, taking and posting a photo every day does lead to lower quality. I know, I've taken some awful ones!

But from my point of view, that's really ok. Actually I think it's necessary, as pushing through those bad days (or weeks!) will probably make me a better photographer.

And publishing those bad photos because I have nothing better on that day is excellent for putting my ego back in its place ;)

So, for me at least, it's not lowering my motivation to spend time here, au contraire :)

Paweł Kadysz That way, we'll have like only 3 or 5 users getting featured. Every day a tiny minority gathers most of the daily likes. Also, there will literally be no chance for a newcomer to get featured until he or she gains some following. Think about it? Is that really what you want?

There is a "popular" tab, where photos are sorted by likes (not only, but likes are one of the most important factor). There's really no point of duplicating that.

Jesse Lind You have a really good point! We could maybe put in something that you can vote on the daily photo if it has over, let's say 10 likes? I don't know, I'm just thinking...

Ian Prince Mmm, have the number of users really been dwindling? I keep seeing new dedicated photographers signing up regularly (hello @ann !... hello @patrick !).

Tookapic maybe doesn't get all the attention it deserves, but building a community takes time, and I appreciate all the hard work Pavel is putting in getting the word out, and I'll continue to share on Facebook.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new release, even if I really like the current version!

As for he streak rule, I really think it's a really good idea! Once past the initial "omg, how's that going to be possible!?", I find the streak really motivating to keep talking photos every day.

Lastly, I think the Favorites sections is just great just as it is, hi-lighting (and motivating!) as many photographers as possible. Photography is always going to be subjective, and the Favorites sections is just that, perfect!

Happy photographing everyone :)

P.S. the only thing that's held back new users I've invited is the inability to upload from iOS, tricky to implement as Apple strips the EXIF if I understand correctly.

Paweł Kadysz And unfortunately one that discourages people who miss a day. My suggestion is that we wait for the new version and then we'll have a discussion on what's still missing.

Ian Prince Yeh @patrick , it's Pavel's decisions that count, and that's a very good thing in my opinion!

That said, I get the feeling Pavel is open to ideas expressed here, on tookapic.com/talks/13-tookapic... for example.

P.S. FWIW, it's just as much the kindness of the community as the "streak" that keep me posting here :)

Ian Prince Hihi, time to start shooting in portrait mode ;)

I'm going to miss @ultra_violet 's enticing thumbnails :(

Shenandoah I think I've learned some of the most important things from my "bad" pictures. There are days I have a vision, and might spend an hour or more trying to execute it, with numerous shots to show for it. Unfortunately, none look that great, and I have other demands on my time so have to work with what I already got. So a so-so shot gets uploaded here, yet you'd better believe I learned a whole lot in that attempt!

Nick Graham @Paweł, how have the stats changed with the new version of the website? I notice it now says how many photos you're missing. How can you make those up?

I think one mystery to the website that I (and others) don't exactly understand is how to post a photo a day late. I've tried to upload a picture a day late before and couldn't. I always had to switch the timezone back in order to upload the previous day's photo.

Paweł Kadysz You need to upload those that you haven't. For example if you missed the March 4th, upload a pic from March 4th and the missed days count will decrease.

As for the uploading yesterday's pics... can you tell me what kind of error do you get?

JudithO I posted a pic a day late without issues: just go to the upload as usual and it should show that you did not upload a picture today and yesterday (checkmarks next to days). If you upload yesterdays picture it will detect from the image file that it was taken yesterday and post it for that day. Hope this helps.

Jennifer As someone who will probably never have 400 followers and 150 likes, it's really encouraging to see a variety of people in the featured page. This was a huge issue for me on the last site I used, because it was exactly as Pawel said: the same few people over and over. They were mostly professional photographers, so of course their shots were lovely, but it became everyone else and them. :/
