Save Tookapic
I've been touched by Pawel's last picture (tookapic.com/photos/79311) and story about financial difficulties of Tookapic. I've been also touched by people's comments and I open this talk so that all the community can share ideas to help, if we want Tookapic keeps going.
Michael Gatton Spread the word more aggressively? Get more people on the site? I'm not really sure how money is generated beyond subscriptions and sales of stock photos...
Satoshi T I think "Hero" is a kind of financial support system. but its support force is not so strong... I suggest more high annual fee type named "Super Hero".
Luke I agree, I think something like this would definitely help alleviate some of the current running costs.

1. Perhaps a roundabout way of getting exposure here, but a potential place to start. Having some tookapic people be featured on other sites/blogs/magazines/etc. usually seems to result in a bit of extra traffic. Maybe if we start trying to put ourselves out there, it can give us exposure as well as a potential platform to share about tookapic. Apply to the phoblographer here, for example:

The darth vader series got some pretty wide recognition, so maybe we can have more moments like that.
2. Similarly, submit things to petapixel? I'm not sure how this might work, but they ask for articles and things so we could send in requests to see them feature tookapic.

They did an article on D. Vader, actually, but maybe we could have them focus more on 365 projects and tookapic in general.

Luke As I mentioned in the Pawel's photo thread, I think that something like what Snapwire(snapwi.re) is doing could potentially help out quite a bit. Basically, allowing companies to post requests for photos for advertising, stock, or marketing. Then the users can provide photos for that company to then buy from the website. That way tookapic can be regularly making some much needed money. I have no idea if this is plausible or not...

I think that our problems are associated with a relatively small number of new users:
To remedy this, I propose:
1. The challenge for the already active to attract at least one recruit a month
2. Acquisition of new users care of something like a big brother to help and advise you sometimes criticize - you can not teach exclusively on the praise (of course, a good critic is difficult may indeed easily discouraged but without it is sometimes hard to learn)

Mój angielski jest bardzo słaby dla tego piszę również po polsku nie czas teraz na nie domówienia i błędną interpretację

Paweł Kadysz Thank you for all the support, comments and ideas. Keep them coming. We're now working on making tookapic more friendly for new users. Making it much easier for people to start their projects and less discouraging if they break the streak (breaking the streak is a huge downer).
Some of you emailed me directly and new opportunities appeared. I had no idea what you people do outside tookapic (I didn't keep up with the "Let's talk" thread). And it's very impressive.
We're also working on making that "Donation" page happen. Unfortunately, we're based in Poland - the country with really screwed up tax laws. Setting up the donation page requires us to change the terms of the site and figure out how to settle the donations in terms of taxes. It will appear on the site, but it'll take some time.
It will not be a typical donation. Instead, we'll offer a "Backer" status for anyone who wants to contribute. One time payment will extend your backer status for one month. But you'll be able to extend it to whatever period you want (100 years - why not :P). The "Backer" status won't unlock any additional features and will be completely independent to the Hero plan.
Monthly Hero subscription will probably go away, since the company that handles the payment takes a cut that's pretty big. The annual plan will stay as it is and will cost $59. We'll add another 6-month plan for around $36 - which will actually cost exactly the same - 6/mo, but we'll be paying smaller cut to the payment company.

And one last news. I just downloaded the source code for tookapic iOS app. I really need to personally thank our lawyer for help with retrieving that. I'm forwarding the app to another development company.
Thanks again for the support. The number of new Heroes surprised me. It's very possible that we'll be able to cover this month server expenses with those new subscriptions.
Jennifer We're all part of tookapic now! You mentioned that without it, there would be a huge gap in your life, but I think that would be true to some degree for all of us who look forward to seeing what's new every day.

Only a note, think about open APIs that let developers (like me) make apps, websites widgets, something linked to tookapic easily and quickly, this could increase OUR (I feel myself a part of tookapic too) visibility.
Huge photo platforms has open APIs and this encourage developers to do anything.
Sometimes this help to create something you never tought about.

elenagutga Hi! I'm quite new here on Tookapic, but I love the site and the community around it. I started this project because I wanted to learn. My first picture here was the first one I shot in manual. There are many awesome and experimented photographers here, but I think that there are also many people here like me, beginners who want to learn. So my idea would be a workshop to learn about photography. There are many information out there on the internet, but I would pay for organized and practical information (not only theory!) and someone who would criticize my photos... What do you think about it? :)
Richard Morwood Yes, I'd go for someone to criticize my photo's as well. "Great shot" comments are nice but don't tell me how to improve. I will now follow you and try to give constructive criticism on your photos.
Satoshi T elenagutga , Some people do not like the criticism in the people who are here. Senior is sometimes refrain from criticism even if there is a point to be worried about. so I recommend you will write your profile "I want to learn photography, welcome criticize" . :)
