Hi, my beloved Tookafriends!
I just want a second opinion. For sure I'm not the only one, who works irregular hours, with days when You have to go to sleep straight after work just to get enough sleep to go back to work in the morning. Or just to avoid being a zombie and falling asleep at work.
Of course, work is just one reason - sometimes it's an unexpected beer with friends... two days in a row. Well, happens, I won't pretend anything different about yesterday's streak breaking ;)
Anyway, it ends up with my streak constant resets.
24 hours might be absolutely enough for most of us I aslo know, that I could just take a photo, transfer it through wi-fi and upload it from my smartphone, but... one of my goals of tookapic is to play a little in post-processing with every photo I upload. My Lightroom school.
When I first broke the streak, and it was after about five or six days of tookapic, I felt the most demotivated ever. Now I don't care that much - but I was wondering, if any of You would vote for extending the time to upload a photo to, let's say - 48 hours.
I can even agree for it to be a Hero/SuperHero exclusive feature, since everyone will have to become a hero in a month. As said in the beginning - I want a second opinion, opening the discussion now.
PS. 4:20 :wink wink: I should probably go to sleep already...
Lauren Huston
Personally I would love to have a longer limit, even an day extra day would be handy (superhero privileges? hmm...). I remember when I did three days straight (Thursday, Friday & Saturday) of milky way shooting after work. I wouldn't get home until 12:30-1am and had to get back up for work at 6, so it took until the weekend to actually sit down and sort through the shots.
Combine that with chronic fatigue and it's impressive I get around to uploading anything at all. :)
Paweł Kadysz Lets say you uploaded a photo on Monday. Your streak breaks only if you don’t upload your next consecutive (Tuesday’s) photo before 11:59 pm on Wednesday. So it’s not full 48 hours, but it’s more than 24 hours.
Kazzi
Assuming I've taken a photo right before midnight - I have 24 hours to upload it, if I've taken a photo right after midnight, I have 48 hours.
But it doesn't matter - counting from the end of the day that particular photo was taken, it's one whole 24 hours period to fit into. So in my case - one evening after work. Sometimes it's not possible to fit into that limit.
I am against extending it for all users, since streak is a great motivator, and even if You extend it for superhero users - most people won't even notice. ;)
Karolina Oksiędzka The streak is just a motivating thing. I broke mine cause I was in the wildernes in African safari park and I literally slept in the bush for few days. No electricity, no internet, no phone reception. Do I regret it was broken? No. Streak rules are just rules. If your work or lifestyle does not go well with those rules just enjoy your beers and late activities :). Do you really nead the streak?
Rob Ok, this may be a long explanation. I'm apologizing in advance if it ends up being as such!
Lightroom, or whatever post-processing method one is using, is just as much a part of photography these days as is knowing aperture & shutter speed. For me, even if I do not edit a photo in any way it's important that I catalog and organize my photos. I don't want to get in the habit of using my iPhone app to connect to the camera and publish my photo; therefore, my goal is to publish a photo after I have run it through my Lightroom workflow.
Sometimes that means I don't publish a photo every day, but it certainly doesn't mean I didn't take a photo every day. If I'm away from my computer, which often happens on weekends, then I'm ok knowing I have photos for every day since I last posted. In my head, my streak is still going, yet I'll admit it is a bit demoralizing to see the streak get reset because I didn't actually publish one.
In my opinion, one of the best parts of tookapic isn't just that people get to document their lives, but that they are being hands-on with photography every day and becoming better photographers because of it. Learning how to process digital images in something like Lightroom is an essential part of going from a good image you can show people on your phone to an amazing image that hangs on your wall.
Personally, I would remove the time limit completely. Some people may go away on vacation/holiday and not be around a computer. Some (like me) may have so many kids activities that between those and work it becomes difficult to sit down in front of the computer to process photos. But I eventually get around to it.
I think the best way to keep the streak system is to simply use the EXIF data. Obviously, that can be manipulated - but if someone is willing to go through that, then they're really only cheating themselves.
EDIT: By the way, another primary reason I won't upload a pic without running through my Lightroom workflow is that once a photo is on my computer it will automatically get backed up at night. Please... everyone, BACK UP YOUR PHOTOS!!
Ian Prince I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for but under settings you can hide your streak number. From what I understand the EXIF is used for number of missing days.
Satoshi T I am almost same as @Rob. Even if I shoot with a camera that can not output RAW, I will organize my photos and load everything into LightRoom. With this work, all my picture data (taken with canon, sony, olympus) is automatically stored on the NAS, which will also be uploaded to the cloud over time. After experiencing a harsh disk crash in the summer of 2016, I established a workflow in which NAS automatically backs up to the cloud while I was sleeping.

Everyone should make the own decision about breaking the streak... For some people is important, for other not....
For me a 365 days project is ONE picture EVERY day
Marta Tomaszewska One picture taken or published? ;-)
Some people still have some time in their lives without internet access (with me among them), and publication ciriteria is not for them.
Marcin K. I have a feeling like there is kind of misunderstanding. A streak is not just about taking photos, it is about uploading them daily. E.g., you loose the streak when you stop uploading photos for a few days, even though you take photos daily. What you mentioned is getting missed days as I understand. ;-) Cheers!
Marta Tomaszewska
In fact you're right, but I have more feeling like it's "photos taken in a row". On the profile page you don't have any other number saying how may days in a row you have with photos.
In fact "streak" should be called "addiction factor" - how many days you couldn't live without tookapic :D :D :D
Szymon Maciejczyk WI have a problem with streak when I am going to my wife's family (almost every weekend) . There is no good internet connection and I am spending few hours uploading photo sometimes and I just can't do it ;/
Paweł Kadysz In that cases I just scale the photo down to the min. 1280px required and it usually uploads then.
Szymon Maciejczyk thanks

FlyteWizard Don't you already have 48hours to post a photo without it ruining your streak?
You need to take a picture everyday, but you can upload it the next day (so not really a true 48hours, but you have a buffer day for upload).
